So I just got back from a very reputable Harley performance shop in my town. I was basically told that my setup was a piece of shit and I wasted my money. I know I could have spent less money on a better setup but damn. I told him what I had and he proceeds to show me all these dyno sheets of bikes that are making well into the 100's HP and TQ. What upset me was were any of these Sportsters...NO. The one Sportster he told me about made 90's HP and TQ essentially on heads alone. He basically told me to change everything in order to make more power. Tell me what you guys think and Harley Mechanics pipe in and let me know what you think.

883R w/ SE stage I air cleaner and SE II pipes (pre EPA crap) rejet 180 main 45 slow 44.6HP and 49.8 TQ

1200 upgrade:
SE stage 1 air cleaner
SE II pipes
1200 SE heads
1200 cylinders
1200 pistons
1200 ignition module
SE plug wires
SE plugs
push rods
SE .551 cams
same 180 main and 45 slow rejet
72.4 HP and 67.5 TQ I know some work needs to be done because the HP curve should be smooth and not falling off up top like it is. (especially with cams I have)

Getting from point A to point B is plenty quick with what you've already done, and remember, over half the fun and enjoyment is the twisties on a Sportster and the ability to take in your surrounds as you ride.  I personally think you've got a hot 883, but agree you've done TOO much to get it there.  Maybe a different dyno, just in case his is off.   If you don't like the results from what you've done, you'd better buy a Hyabusa or ZX14 and forget what riding a Harley is all about.

It looks like it's dropping off up top, maybe just a bigger main jet?

This is why I really don't care about suping it up. I just like the ride and thats all there is to it.

That's a good point.  I'm running a Stage .5 on an otherwise stock 1200 with a 185 main.  BUT, if needed, your dyno guy should have picked that up.

Don't get me wrong I love my Sportster and I am content with what I have done. The main reason I went in the first place was I was concerned that the bike needed to be rejetted after the conversion because of the drop off in power up top(the dyno's were done at a Harley dealership in town) and I wanted his opinion on it. If I can get that curve smoothed out I will be more than happy. Again, the most important thing for me is that the bike runs "correctly" with what is done.

I can understand where he is coming from not being impressed with my setup because he does build drag bikes but if it were me I would try and help someone with what they have and not tell them to change everything.

I'm glad to hear you're happy with the bike - you had me scared!

I agree that he could have, and should have, been more helpful rather than critical.

+1  A dyno run without a A/F ratio graph is pretty useless for analysing why it's running out of steam.  Your gain though isn't bad where it counts in the 3500 - 4500 rpm range.

You are also probably stepping on your dong if you are running the SE Ignition module, the  spark advance timing blows for your application.  If you didn't see this thread I posted last week it will show you what I'm talking about.

Why would he show you bikes that are making numbers in the hundreds that are NOT comparable to yours?  What difference does it make if some 110 cubic inch is posting higher numbers? The only results that would really be of value to you are dyno sheets from similar bikes with similar set-ups... This guy doesn't sound very helpful at all.  If it were me, I'd be finding another dealer that treated me with a little more respect

Well this guy isn't a dealer. He is just a Harley performance shop. I guess he was just boasting that his work made good numbers.

So on that TC88A unit. Is it something that is plug and play or do I still need to take it and have it tuned? As one said, I don't know why the dyno didn't have an air/fuel ratio on it. A dyno is useless without it.

I think that shops reputation needs a re-evaluation.  The guy sounds like a douche bag know-nothing prick and didn't really help you AT ALL.  If he builds drag bikes, then he should understand that not everyone rides one.  Who cares what you're riding besides you?  All you're asking him to do is run it and give you information on what you can do to further tune your current setup.  In not doing so...he is in fact an ass hat with a super ego.

Run it at a shop that gives a damn and get an A/F reading...this will show you where your problems are so you know WHAT you need to do to correct them.  After you clean up your tune, then worry about further upgrades.

And just from what I'm seeing...it doesn't look like you're too out of whack.

The TC88A comes with a map but it is optimized for the TC88 motor.  You can either have it tuned by a decent dyno guy, or if you have a laptop and buy the connecting cable, I can send you the optimized map I am using and you can just load it to the module yourself.

EricM-

As someone who works in sales, let me tell you that this guy is using a sleazy tactic called a negative sell.  It is employed by the lowest of the low in the sales world.  It's generally a tactic that is used when the seller has no confidence in their own product and relies on bashing others in order to secure a sale.  It's an awful tactic and one that when used on me causes me to walk, no, run away.  I do not ever deal with someone that uses a negative sell.

You have a great set up.  Take it to someone else if you want to eek every bit of performance out of it.  Do not go back to this huckster.

A good salesman, no matter what industry he works in, will never use a negative sell.  They may point out things in their own products that perhaps makes up for deficiencies in a competitors without bashing said competitor.  A good sales person that is selling a good product does not need to bash another's.

The only thing I would change is the ignition. I used the Dana ignition on my conversion and I loved it. It's programmable, You can set the timeing for the front and rear cylinder indipendantly of each other. Other than that, you have a good sound setup.Don't worry about that poor excuse for an oxygen user, He shoould be stayed away from. He gives "wrenches" a bad name.

Well in that case what are some other good programmable modules? And where are some reputable shops in my area? I live in the Atlanta Georgia area.

Ditch your headders w/ the crossover, it is blocking your flow at WOT.  A couple of searches on the site will show you that I am a 2 into 1 fan but many here like the look of 2 into 2 better than getting the gains of a good header system.
