Default Carb or F.I.,which one do you prefer and why.

Here's a topic that came up at the local watering hole. What do most folks prefer and why.Carb or F.I. Pro's and con's if any on either one and if you've done any modifications on your bike, how did it turn out.

Both have pros and cons but I think that I'll have to choose the carb when it comes down to it. FI is nice but too reliant on your local mechanic and his/her nifty electronics. Carbs can be tinkered with. Haven't done any mods yet and not sure what I'm going to do if any. Just my preference.

I have a soft spot (in my head? <G&gt for carbs, just because of the "tinkerability" of 'em. Since I keep a bike for 10 - 20 years I do a lot of tinkering. I think if I was buying a new GeezerGlide for touring it'd get a fuelie system and extended warranty. Any other bike I'd be changing so much that I wouldn't want the expense of the fuelie system.

That's good advice. The FI systems are new at this point in time and will no doubt be 'tinkered' with a plenty in the near future.

"The best and latest anti-theft system is soon out done by a common thief" (someone with electronics company said that). FI is electronic....

I have FI on my newest bike and I think it is awesome!
So far the performance has been steady and even!
I took it to the mountains this weekend and it was nice to not have any altitude issues!
It ran like I was home.

If you are going to build a bar hopper, you have to go with carbs, for the look, and the tinkering ability. But, I'm running a bagger, and the instant startup, ability to run in mountains and valleys with the efi making the adjustments is great.

Problems, yeah, my efi air sensor went screwy and I started stalling at intersections. Scary, yes, and I couldn't fix it. But I could give you a long list of times my carb bikes have let me down. Everything will break, but the consistancy of the EFI has made me a convert.

Those are good points, Scout. I'll have to keep those in mind when I'm getting my next bike.

I went for the EFI for the reasons mentioned. Startup, dependability in any place without worrying about the mixture, steady pull throughout the range of the motor, fuel economy to name a few.

It's an old technology that is relatively new to Harleys...

For those of us that don't have the time to tinker...it's the answer.

hey hdsoul,

I chose fuel injection becouse of the ease of starting, no worries about warming it up, altittude problems, etc.

I think they run smoother too.

If you plan on alot of mods at different times then carb might be the way to go. But if you do all the mods at one time then get the EFI mapped then fuel inj. is the way to go.

I dont plan on alot of mods on my bike. If I do it will be when the engine goes many years from now.

no worries about warming it up
That might be enough reason to go EFI right there.
