Planning a ride to Colorado from Ohio in May taking Rt66. can anyone tell me how the roads are in early May? Going to Gunnison Colorado and do not want to run into snow. Thinking May should be ok. Thanks
Not sure about your entire route, but if there is one thing about the weather in any mountain state it's that you can run into snow any time of the year. THE MAMA and I had a snowball fight in July on our honeymoon in Colorado. Anytime you go into the mountains, pack gear for cold weather.
Gunnison in May: Average high = 65 F, average low = 30 F
Did the snowball fight thing myself on the great divide back when I was in the Boy Scouts. 4th of July celebration. A lot of it depends on your elevation. (Obviously)
You could have snow in May in the Gunnison area, especially if you go over any of the passes to get there, and there is not much way of getting there without going over a pass if you are coming from the East. You didn't say whether it would be late or early May. Later would certainly be better. We go over some of these passes often, and if you have bad weather, they are tricky, even in a 4 wheel drive.
I live 70 miles south of Hwy 66 in Arizona. My wife planted some flowers on the porch in early May last year. Oops, the next morning they were covered in snow. Weather out here in the spring is real iffy. Nice one day; horrible the next. To be sure, wait until late June/early July or later but do it before mid October and you should be good to go but remember in the Southwest, ain't nothin' ever predictable. Colorado is further north and higher than central Arizona, so you makes you choice. My take: unless you are very hardy, wait until summer.
