Harley-Davidson, to most of us, is the maker of the greatest motorcycles in the world. But it’s also an iconic brand that has attracted a cult following. With a logo and an image that is instantly recognizable around the world, H-D isn’t just a motorcycle company – it’s a lifestyle brand.

Things weren’t always that way, of course. Back in the 30’s and 40’s, Harley was producing great bikes but hadn’t quite grown the massive fanbase it enjoys today. They were, of course, building legendary bikes like this 1948 UL Flathead, however – a motorcycle that was just at home cruising the highway as it was doing commercial work.

This ’48 has been lovingly and painstakingly restored using nothing but NOS parts, and the result is one seriously stunning bike. The black and yellow paint with red pinstriping is period perfect, and everything from the Springer fork to the Beck headlamp are 100% correct.

The 74 ci Flathead “Knucklehead” in the frame represented the end of an era, as 1948 was the final year before the Panhead V-Twin replaced it. It’s a fitting powerplant for such a classic ride, which is one of the finest we’ve ever laid eyes on. It’s also a great reminder of where the H-D legend began to hit its stride, long before the brand was a worldwide phenomena.
