The Best Motorcycle Helmets of 2018 (Video)
Next up is the “Best New Premium Helmet.” The AGV Sportmodular Carbon helmet looks amazing, but it’s equal parts form and function. “The first thing I love about the Sportmodular is the fact that it’s going to be 3K carbon,” says Anthony. Besides looking cool, it also means superior crash resistance and lighter weight. Lighter weight means less fatigue, which means longer rides. Of course, at $850, it’s almost six times the price of the Scorpion EXO-R420, but if money is no object, this is the helmet to get.
The last two helmets are the best overall helmets of 2018. This balanced safety, build quality, comfort, and value to determine the overall best buy for helmets this year. The runner up, the HJC RHPA 70 ST, takes features from a track-oriented helmet and integrates them into an aerodynamic shape that’s more street-friendly for upright riding. Most notable is the ventilation, an often-overlooked aspect of helmet design that pays dividends in rider comfort. In Anthony’s words, “When we think about riding from the track all the way to long-distance touring, that better venting scheme is going to come in much more handy.”
So what is Revzilla’s best overall helmet of 2018? That honor belongs to the Arai Defiant X. “There’s no true category you can’t have a great riding experience if you’re riding in a Defiant X,” says Anthony. The retro style of the helmet hides the complicated engineering that makes this helmet very safe and very comfortable. For us Harley guys, it’s great to have a helmet option that looks cool without sacrificing comfort and safety, and Revzilla agrees. At around $600, it’s not the cheapest helmet out there, but considering that it protects the most important part of your motorcycle, we’d consider it a bargain.
