Harley Motorcycle Security Options: Don’t get stolen!
Harley Davidson motorcycles are among the least likely to be stolen,
according to the latest insurance reports. (The
most-likely-to-be-stolen motorcycles are small displacement “crotch
rocket”-type motorcycles preferred by a younger group of riders. In
addition to being owned by more mature riders, the larger, heavier
Harley-Davidsons are simply more difficult to steal because of their
sheer weight and bulk.) However, this does not mean that someone will
not be tempted to heist your ride.
It is good to know that Harley-Davidson owners have a variety of
security options for their vehicles, from the simple to the
sophisticated. Let’s start with the simple.
One of the least complicated security devices for your
Harley-Davidson is a padlock and a chain — simple, low cost, and quite
effective. For a more stylish approach, you can purchase a padlock that
sports the Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo. Most locks are keyed
rather than combination locks.
An alternative to the traditional lock and chain is a cable lock.
This is a super-hardened steel cable with a built-in keyed or
combination lock. Depending on your vehicle and your security
situation, choose from 12, 15 or 20mm diameter cable thicknesses.
A disc brake lock helps prevent roll-away theft of your Harley. This
device locks with a key and engages the front disc brake on your
vehicle so no one can roll it down the road and into a van. Many
feature a reminder cord. This is a highly visible cord that runs up to
the seat area indicating the disc brake lock is in place. This is for
your safety and the mechanical health of the motorcycle. The reminder
chord reminds the rider to remove the disc lock before he or she
attempts to start and ride.
Moving on to the more sophisticated locking devices, we are
referring to an audible security system like on an automobile. These
devices emit a sharp siren or similar sound to ward off any thief
quickly. If a thief would attempt to steal your Harley-Davidson
motorcycle, this device automatically disables the battery, the
ignition system, and the fuel-injectors, making it impossible to start
or ride the bike. Some electronic security systems disengage when the
rider sets the vehicle upright and then re-engages after s/he shuts off
the ignition. Most come with key-fob remote. A nice option on some of
these systems is a security system pager. This device allows the
vehicle owner to monitor the security system operation remotely. An LED
display gives the rider information about arming, disarming, and
triggering the security system. Pagers have a range of up to one-half
mile and feature audio and vibration modes; a battery backup allows the
pager to operate even if wires are cut or the battery on your bike is
disconnected. You can purchase a pager that works off a battery or is
rechargeable.
You can also buy various locks for the parts and accessories of your
ride. For example, purchase a keyed, detachable lock for your Harley’s
backrest. Or purchase a keyed lock for your luggage packs.
As you can see, many security devices are available to help make riding your Harley-Davidson motorcycle more carefree and fun.
