The Speed Merchant Does it Again
Our good friends over at The Speed Merchant have built another stunning tracker for their friend and chef Sean Yontz.
“Our friend, Chef Sean Yontz, wanted to do something different with his recently acquired, 2005-model Sportster,” says Brandon. “He wanted a mix of a few different Sportsters that I have built in the past. So I took a little from each of my previous builds, and incorporated them into his new bike.”
Sean gave the guys three requests: the bike had be black, with rear-set pegs and rocking a front number plate.
Actual build time was technically less than six months but the project from first thought to fruition took two and a half years to complete. “I chipped away at it little by little,” explains Brandon. “And by doing this, it actually went though some major changes—some of which make the build so much better.”
Halfway through the build, Brandon realised that he wasn’t happy with the stock fuel tank. Luckily a good friend donated an almost-complete XR-style tank. All it needed was a filler, tunnel and mounting points.
A tank was finished and mounted and then Brandon focussed on building an aluminum tail section. “It had to be narrow to match the tank. So to do this, I had to ditch the stock oil tank and battery set-up—they were just too wide in my opinion.”
The new oil tank was made from aluminum and the bike was fitted with an Anti-Gravity battery. Once that was done a new subframe was fabricated to reconnect all the bits. There are several other custom-made parts that include the skid plate a wicked curvy 2-1 stainless exhaust.
With pipes that twisted you have to add some grunt. The engine was bored out to 1200cc using Wiseco pistons a 10:1 compression ratio, and dropped in a Andrews N4 camshaft. A proven combo that they have used before. A nice Chopper Daves air cleaner was fitted and the final drive was convertedfrom belt to chain.
The front-end was fitted to Speed Merchants own Speed Trees and preload adjusters. Double 19” Harley-Davidson wheels were fitted, Maxxis dirt-track tires and upgraded Tokico brake calipers, mounted on Speed Merchant radial mount brackets to provide the woah.
The Sporty’s got some other wicked trick bits to help tie it all together and finish the build: Magura handlebars, Motion Pro grips and Accossato hand controls. Storz Performance and Speed Merchant combined to create the rear sets to meet the original requirement that Sean laid out. Oh yeah, the number plate is on there as well shining light down the road with a Lazer Star head light.
This beauty is called “Pata Negra”. That’s Spanish for “the black hoof” for the prized Iberico ham made exclusively from black Iberian pigs.
True to its name, it’s been painted in layers of gloss and matte black, executed by Matt at Colorzone Designs. The pin striping was meticulously striped by Pacman Line and Lettering and the layers of gloss and matte black by Matt from Colorzone Designs.
With the time to plan, build, and make changes the bike turned out better than if they had rushed it. Unfortunately Sean is recovering from a broken left leg that was snapped in two places.
