Aha! Then all that needs to be done is to figure out if it is USB2.0 or 3.0. I guess I'll be doing this too, going the splitter route.
I checked with a tech at HD HQ and they said it's 2.0. That's a good thing because there are quite a few inexpensive options out there for a USB 2.0 extension with a bulkhead.
Getting some great input guys, really appreciate it. I would think that a simple extension would work well for me because once that's done I don't see a need to plug anything that I would store in that box into a USB. If I did start carrying something else that needed just a USB charge I could always tap into the 12v outlet nearby and run a new charge only USB back into the compartment. My only concern with my plan is, is there a point where the extension cable would be too long to carry the proper charge or transfer the data to the HU?
It's only 5v, so I doubt there will be a lot of loss over a 10' span. The option is to put that 12v outlet in the back (I just did and it's really easy) and run the power from there into a 2+ port hub.
I put a USB multimeter on it and it is definitely 5V at 500milliamps. You can charge an iPhone and run a thumb drive at the same time, but that's pretty much it. The phone draws about 0.45A leaving a little left over for the thumb drive to operate.
I run a splitter in my jukebox and it has worked pretty well so far. Running it back to the TourPak is a pretty cool idea.
I have been running a 4 port USB hub under the fairing. The factory USB cable runs into the hub. From 1 port I have an iPhone 5 cable going into the dash phone compartment. From a 2nd port I have a short USB extension cable running down to the forks so that I can do software updates. From a 3rd port I have a cable running to my driver's backrest; I had a pocket sewn in it so that my wife can store and hook up her phone during long rides.
And connected it, plugged in my thumb drive and without hesitation the music started. So that answers any questions as to if it will work. No need to even put a splitter in the original location as you can do all your updates or add a splitter in the saddlebag.
As for me I already have a charger in my saddlebag so I have the best of both worlds
I will install permanently after I get my Biketronics Amp and Speakers.....lol I am a dealer and have not done my personal bike yet
