Peter Egan once said that every rider should have 7 motorcycles to cover all aspects of riding. Two of them were adventure bike (so lets assume the adventure bike - BMW) and a Harley Davidson touring bike ( I believe he had (or has) a green RK).
So Peter says get both.
.
Actually I have four bikes right now. I also have a '74 XLCH (girls bike LOL) for my vintage fix and a BMW 650 Sertao for commuting, curb jumping, and light trail riding. It took the place of my DR 650.
I don't know if I envy guys who only like one bike because it's cheaper or pity them because they limit themselves instead of enjoying the fun all the different bikes can provide.

Lol - girls bike. Ok....so I did recommend the Sportster as a great choice to my sister. But it was mainly because I wanted to ride it. And it was at a price she could afford.
The Sertao is a great bike. Always wanted a BMW 650. I have a DR which replaced a 525exc mainly to get more road manners to get to the trails. The GS is long gone, so no adventure bike currently. My vintage fix is a 76 Bonneville and a 64 Dream. Sport bike not currently in stable but I would love a KTM RC8R. So I have 3 on his list. Guess I better get to work.

I was kidding with the girls bike comment. I tell people that you better address any girl that can kick start an Ironhead as Ma'am, because she can probably kick your ***.
I loved my DR. I set it up as a "mini" ADV bike. The Sertao is not as good in the dirt but it makes getting there easier. It gets 65 mpg on regular grade gas and can cruise at 75-80 mph on the highway. And has enough electrical capacity to run heated grips and clothing.
BTW, my DR replaced a plated 450 EXC because I can't stand trailering.
yea this thread would be better off lost in digital space, useless to Rushmore way of thinking. Rubbish to say the least.
He's asking about a Rushmore bike so imo it's fair game. Especially since the improved handling of the new bikes bring the performance aspect of riding higher up the scale. I believe that because of this, those who may be considering a BMW touring bike might do well to look at the SGS or RGS. I think a lot of people who haven't ridden a Rushmore bike would be surprised at how well they handle. I know I was. I was sold after 30 seconds in the saddle.
