To be honest I've been a member here since 2009 when I bought a new FLHX. It wasn't until recently that I started posting due to some issues that I just couldn't figure out. I had come here to research problems and get help with installs and maintenance. It is a wealth of information. Now I enjoy reading and commenting on posts that interest me and some day i hope that I can pass along some helpful information that I've learned over the years.
20 years ago my first HD was a 1978 4 speed kick start XLCH and I loved every minute of that leaky, loud, and rattling bike. Now with my 15 FLHTK I feel I am at the pinnacle of my motorcycling wishlist. I bought a new German car a few years back and the fuel pump went bad in the first 700 miles. Machines break. That's what they do. Doesn't make me enjoy them any less. In fact I've spawned into a better shade tree mechanic along the way and enjoy that too.
The only reason I really get frustrated with problems with my bike is because I just want to be out riding it. That's all I ever want. Whether it's on a rickety old Sporty or a sleek and plush new Ultra. I venture to say that's why we're all here.
I have been riding for 45 years and loved every Bike I have owned, each was different but
this 2014 Street Glide will be my last. I enjoy this Bike more then my last two Harley's.
Now that I have made changes to make it comfortable for me, it is a real joy to ride.
I never had such great brakes like this new Linked-ABS system, and for power it has just
about enough, handles great too.
In April, I bought my first ever H-D used (374 miles) from Florida. During the three weeks it took to get delivered (that's another story), I joined the forum and started reading almost every thread that was posted. I already knew the bike was under recall for the clutch and I knew I was going to have to take it to the closet dealer to have that issue taken care of after I took possession of the bike.
My last motorcycle was a 1977 Honda CB750 while I was single and in the Navy. Getting married, having a family and life put an end to my riding days in the mid-80s. Now, that I've gotten much older, I figured my riding days were numbered, so I bought the bike. Before the bike arrived, like I said, I read a lot of threads about issues with the Rushmores. I began thinking I might have made a mistake buying the bike. But, those thoughts were soon replaced with the joy and fun I've been having riding again. I'm having a blast and I'm going to keep riding as long as I'm physically able to do so. Luckily, so far I haven't had any issues and even if I do, I'll get them taken care of and keep putting on the miles. My only regret is that I didn't get back to riding sooner, but I'm doing my best to make up for lost time!
I love riding my 2014 Ultra Limited. It's my second H-D touring bike after having had a Goldwing for over 20 years. It's not perfect, but it's comfortable, powerful, and just has a better vibe than my Goldie. Yeah, I purposely take the long way home most days . . .
Meh, it's the nature of the beast. Forums like this tend to become a way for people to vent about issues, or ask questions regarding issues. I've done the same. But, I've done that with EVERY bike I've owned, because they ALL have little issues. Modern transportation is highly complex, with LOTS of moving parts and electrical doodads that tend to fail at inconvenient times. It happens in my new Ford vehicles, the wife's VW's, my old sportster, my old Sabre, my new streetglide. Parts BREAK, new or old. And, in this day and age with there being more and more plastic parts that are easier and cheaper to produce and replace, they break more often. Again, nature of the beast.
As humans we have a tendency to remember and communicate about the bad much better and more than the good. Except for a minuscule % of MAJOR issues, I am sure that most of us here have had only the everyday, usual, inconvenient issues that all modern vehicle have.
90% of the rides I don't want them to end. My wife has said I thought you were going over that way, well I went that way and then kelp going and then made a big circle lol.
She has not wanted to ride much, it's been hot or rain or some other reason.
So I may be calling her one evening soon from Dallas or Atlanta or Little Rock making my way back the long way through Idaho or Kentucky. It don't really matter what direction as long as it takes a while. I love this Rushmore, it just fits.
Someone after my own heart. I'd have a lot more than 3800 miles on it if it weren't for all this crappy rain and flash flooding here in N TX.
I love my 14 Limited as well. Been riding around the Smoky Mountains for the last two weeks and look forward to riding it everyday. I also plan to leave this one mostly stock. After stage one upgrade I am more than happy with the performance and handling. I know some have problems and I feel for them but so far I am more than pleased.
No complaints here. I was impacted by 2 of the recalls- big deal. Every single new car or truck I've ever purchased was recalled at least once. Heck, one of my co-workers has had his Cadillac recalled at least 12 times and he still loves the car.
Despite all the POTENTIAL issues identified by the recalls, my bike wasn't affected- brake line was not compromised, clutch always (and continues to ) work as it's supposed to. No coolant loss.
Knowing then what I know now, I'd still buy my bike in a heartbeat- no question.
These forums are a great source of information, and can be really entertaining, but they can come across as negative due to a relative minority of owners discussing their problems- which is the point of the forums. As said by others, for every person who has an issue, dozens do not, you don't hear about that stuff.
I would guess that Project Rushmore has been one of the more successful things done by the MOCO.
I know I'm liking it!
If someone just scanned all the thread titles in the Rush' forum, you'd think these bikes were plagued with issues. Well...I'm here to say that on my September 2013 purchased 2014 FLHTC and >15k miles, it's been absolutely trouble free.
I give the FLHTK's 2 thumbs up...
If I came on this site before I ever had a Harley, I don't think I would had ever got one. Just so many more guys on this site, and reading about problems is more fun the my bike runs perfect.
Just mans nature. I have a 14 King and love it. I'm taking it in for Warranty work this week for a switch, I'm not going to make a big deal out of it. My bike makes all kinds of noise and so did all ,my other Harleys. Rushmore is the best so far.
