BTW - at first I was considering to use a thumbdrive but ended up using iPhone because it keeps my phone charged all the time, and I can play things like Pandora, Spotify, youtube. But I have to admit - I often make second trips to my bike cause I forget my phone in the compartment...
I just us mt phone, it stays charged, use iTunes Radio or I-heart or others, at red lights I may check any messages, emails or change playlists, open maps if needed, or may even Bluetooth to the tuner and look around it there. But I never leave it in the compartment and the door puts the wire in a bind when it's closed. This damn fuel door holder is very convenient..now if I could figure away to not have to push the accept button.
For my use, the only advantage of ipod/iphone is ease of sync, for new content. I often listen to audiobooks and podcasts, so makes it quick to get current audio.
I keep a thumbdrive of music zip tied to the iphone cable. That way I always have my regular music available if I do leave my phone behind, although I do normally connect phone so can listen to up to date shows.
have got a 3rd gen Nano(ipod) with about 1500 songs and some podcasts--just play on shuffle----except that almost every ride(longer) it will freeze up necessitating a reset--figure it is just an ipod problem---or
Another Iphone vote. It plays great, displays on the screen, keeps phone charged, streams Pandora and gives me weather alerts*.
*example: wife and I were riding home last night in a torrential downpour, 30+ mph winds, dime sized hail, and the bike announces "lightning has been detected in your area". ;o)
I do get album art on the display when I use my thumb drive. I have had issues making that consistently work streaming from my Android phone. Occasionally, if I screw with it for long enough, I can get it to work ... Usually, however, it jus stays 'stuck' on the first title and art while continuing to move through the playlist ... I believe it is a bug in Android 5.0 ...
I have my iPhone on my handlebar with a RAM Mount setup, works great via bluetooth. I also have a flush mount cig lighter USB adapter and a very short cord so I can plug it in if necessary. I do NOT like the album art on the screen so I don't plug in to the bike's USB. I'd rather have the title, artist, song length, etc. Also, I can use Siri to change to another playlist and get see texts and emails pop up on the screen (so I know if I should pull over to answer something important.)
