Sounds weird I know. I drilled a hole and ran full time power into the compartment and use it to store my phone and charge it as I ride. Then of course got a new Nexus 6 phone and the damn thing doesn't fit. Thinking about taking off the back of the compartment and adding some "straps" so phone or iPod don't slide into fairing but not sure how that would work or if it would cause any issues. And of course heading to Sturgis in 2 days. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
That does not sound like a bad idea and i think it would work just fine....but with that said have thought just buying the 12v outlet that plugs into the battery tender outlet and running it into your saddlebag...just another option
I ran power cables to that compartment For a Bluetooth setup but decided to go another route and pulled the device from that jukebox compartment. I had thought about it in advance and ordered grommets to match the size hole I drilled. I used those grommets to fill the hole and you'd never know it was messed with now. I also ran the 12v power outlet to my saddlebags which is a pretty easy way to go if charging is your only concern. All can go in your left saddlebag and pretty easy install.
I bought a longer iPod cable, rerouted the stock cable under the dash and seat, drilled a tiny hole in the bag, and now the iPod is locked and safe in the saddlebag for a $15 cord !
Maybe I don't understand this post but when you use the usb plug in the device compartment with your cell phone it is being charged when the ignition is turned on. That's the way it works with my iPhone 6.

Correct the Nexus 6 will not even fit in the compartment without the charge cord. Also although I know the USB plug will charge the phone, 1) it only charges when the bike is on (the one I installed is always hot) and 2) I do not use my phone for music, I have a separate Ipod that is always plugged into the USB cable.
Like the simple idea of tapping the the battery tender plug and letting the phone rest on the tray in the saddlebag especially based on time constraints.
The 6 plus barely fits without the charge cord attached. It will not fit with it attached so I believe the OP wants to make the compartment deeper.
I agree that the USB connector will charge but there is no room left when using larger phones like the big Nexus and iPhone 6 Plus.
