I have the HD adjustable one on my new bike and had the Mustang adjustable on the old one. I prefer the Mustang backrest better. Only reason I have the HD one is the fact that the dealer gave it to me for free when I bought my new bike.
I have the fixed seat. My recollection is that there are three sets of holes to mount the bracket which gives the installer the flexibility to shift the bracket forward or backward as required/desired. However, keep in mind, the slit in your seat generally is centered over the bracket when it is mounted to the center set of holes. Moving the bracket forward or backward causes the mount and slit to be misaligned. This doesn't make the backrest unusable, just more of a hassle to install/remove and I'm not sure if it will wear the seat eventually.
+4 for the Mustang driver backrest. I have lower back trouble and riding long distances would be difficult without it. The Mustang model has more height adjustments than the less expensive HD rest. A thumb screw adjuster allows you to move it forward or backward as much as you would need.
+5 - I have the Mustang rider/backrest and passenger combo on my HSC and wife and I love it. Just wish I could transfer it to the new Road King I plan on getting in the fall!
Adjustable backrest was not comfortable for me on the 2014 SGS. Backrest pad was too high and too far forward. Did the following modification to the backrest post. Extended the radius of the bend down and cut and welded the post. Moved the pad down two inches and two inches back. Now it's comfortable for me.
I have the old style and it moves me too far forward. I tried to adjust but no good. I'm just too big 290 lbs. but I don't have a big rear end. Feels like I'm riding on the tank I have a 16 Ultra Limited. I like my Street Glide seat better than anything else. LRB VNVMC
As I mentioned earlier, i have the adjustable. The one thing I did not like about the adjustable when compared to the regular one was - there is so much exposed metal. The other one is covered.
So, my wife decided to do this - and she trimmed it to match my whisky color.
