When I read about issues like this, it makes me reluctant to buy a new Harley. And many other reasons. I agree that anybody with a defective cap should return it to the dealer, so the Moco gets its head right.
And I agree with Hard-headed. I will say living in Wisconsin that I meet lots of Harley subcontractors, so the death of American components is exaggerated.
Well said, but as long as folks keep buying these bikes as fast as the MOCO can crank 'em out, then why should they do anything different (like designing gas caps that work, for instance)?

My '94 Dyna Convertible has the same issue. If they haven't figured out a fix yet, they ain't gonna!

I love my '15 Limited and my Dyna, but have zero respect for the company that built them.

Sure am glad my Harley is after the AMF ones and before most that are now built in Gurgaon, India (near Delhi)..
From the rumor, almost all are built there and the US imports are simple rolled thru the US line to add the labels.

Double edge sword. Take a couple minutes with a file and fix it ourselves permanently, or take the time and effort to have the dealer replace it with another under warrenty. Problem being it isn't being fixed, just delayed til it happens again. I understand the need to hold the MOCO accountable and the only way is to have them replace under warrenty. But damn that's aggravating. Possibly the best course of action is to have the dealer replace it, then when it happens again, fix it yourself. At least that way HD has been made aware and you now have a functioning gas cap and can put the dreaded gas cap behind you.

I stopped for gas this morning on the way into work. I couldn't get the cap back on much more than about half a turn when it just started ratcheting. I stopped by the dealer on the way home this evening. Took the Service guy about 20 min to write up the ticket. Took a cap off another 16RGU that was on a table in the service dept and swapped out with mine. The new cap looks a bit different than the one he took off of mine, but it works much easier.

After running across this thread last night I made a trip to my local HD shop today and asked about a new cap. I was quickly told that was a warranty issue and apparently a supplier had ran a month long bad batch of caps. Of course they didn't have any in stock, but they would order me one along with the 5 or 6 other folks that had brought it to their attention.

That is total BS! The MOCO has been churning out junk gas caps since at least 1994. My '94 Dyna was the same way and the fix was the same.

We all know that some components come from overseas and I would believe most of the international models are built in India. However, anyone who has ever taken one of the factory tours in York or Kansas City would most likely disagree that the US models are simply "labeled". The factories at least stamp out and weld tanks and fenders, paint them and the frames as well as final assembly and quality assurance for the US bikes.

That seems to be the standard answer for every issue. I got the same response when my shifter shaft failed for the second time in 24K miles. Was told that they are having "supplier" issues. Don't know specifically where those parts come from but seems to me we didn't have as many "supplier" issues when most of our "suppliers" were here in the USA.

If the box has the MOCO's logo, then the MOCO is responsible for it being serviceable, regardless of the country of origin.

The "supplier f-ed up" excuse means nothing, as is the case with most excuses for poor performance. If the MOCO actually cared about the true quality of their products, they would do something about this BS. They don't, so they won't.
