Default "softer" ride the answer?

Just returned from a 2600 mile, 8 day trip through Nova Scotia...beautiful country. The issue is that I have are the stock shocks on my '14 RK; I am not a big guy as the air is pretty much at the minimum. I have a bad back - got a back rest which was a big help on the interstate, but those small imperfections on the secondary roads, especially after a few hours in the saddle are killer. Saying that, I don't want to impact the handling of the bike, which I believe softer rear shocks will....Yeah, I suppose I want my cake, etc, etc.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and I did search previous posts and it seems that people either love, hate or are indifferent with respect to hand adjustable, progressives and ohlins.....yikes!

Pretty much any aftermarket suspension will dramatically improve your situation.

How much you spend and how you set it up are totally up to you, and you will enjoy upgraded suspension with every single mile.

All the best,

Shane

Before you spend a bunch of money on new shocks I recommend you drain the shock fluid out of your stock air shocks and replace it with 10W shock fluid. You'll need 13 oz. per shock on the RK (I think your
RK has the standard length 13" shocks, not the lower 12' shocks). I did this on my '14 Limited and it really transformed the ride. You'll spend about $40.00 for a quart of shock fluid and a big syringe for refilling it. Amazon.com has the syringes, I used a 150ml. one. Instructions are a forum search away.

I'd try 15 psi. Made a big difference on mine. If your at 0 psi, it'll ride rough.

I was in the same boat. The answer for me was a set of Ohlin 2-2b shocks from Howard. It raised the bike up a fraction of an inch when sitting on it but is about 1/2" or so higher without my weight on it. Shocks have 3 5/16" travel compared to about 2" with the stock shocks. The ride has gone from harsh to smooth and no more bottoming out. I couldn't be happier. These are one of his lower priced shocks that are a fantastic bang for the buck imho.
