Default Speedo replacement - programming question

I bought a set of white on black gauges for my RGS (to replace the black on white originals which I can't stand) and the manual says it needs to be programmed to the ECM to get the mileage. It's too bad, since another speedo I installed on a 2008 Dyna allowed the owner to marry it to the ecm w/o having to bring it to the dealer.

Anyway, I want to install it, but am wondering if there is any concern about doing that, then riding the 15 miles or so to the dealer to get it programmed?

Anyone do this?

I agree on the black on white. Replacement is in my future plans as well. Interested to see the responses.

Interesting. I just read a review on the product page on HD.com and the writer said he didn't need to bring it to the dealer, the mileage transferred correctly when he first started it.

So I guess I'll find out and report back.

What year bike? Did you buy the gauges new?

From everything I have read the mileage is stored in the ECM and I believe on the trip B readout it should say 31. This is a count down feature that will marry the Speedo to the ECM and your miles will be accurate, no dealer involved. If you bought used and beyond the 31 mile countdown it cannot be married to another ECM. 2014-up

So long as the gauges are new and have not been married to another bike previously - it should be plug & play
If they have been married to another bike it won't work no matter what you try to do..

2016 RGS (the one in my sig) Brand new gauge. That's the way it worked with my Dyna gauge, except that the gauge came with a 6" cable that plugged into the diag connector to initially program it.

I only asked because the item description on HD.com said it required dealer to transfer mileage. Guess they just don't want a dumbass like me removing five screws...

Nope, brand new gauges.

Doing it in about 30 min, then out for a ride. (Hopefully not to the dealer). I'll post results later.

Thanks guys.

I did some research on this earlier this year. I bought a CVO dash speedo setup. Already married to the prev owners bike. There was no way that anyone knew of to re-marry or re-callibrate the speedo on a can-bus bike (2014 - later) But if I bought a new one, the instructions would say, (short version) to remove seat. Attach jumper from cable X to speedo, do some voodoo with the switchs, and it would transfer the miles from the BCM to the new speedo. If yours broke under warranty, you would have to order one from Harley pre-programmed and depending on your dealer, he would give to you to install, or bend you over the bike while they install it. Hope this helps.
Anyone else, let me know of any discrepencies with this comment please.

Also, i ended up just using my "stock" speedo and just had to splice in the correct connector to fit my ignition switch. CVO's don't have an ignition switch, they have a lighted disc in place of the switch.

Just as JMC22 said, it was plug and play. Installed the new console, started the bike and my mileage was there. Also, as said, trip B had 31 miles on it that counted down to 0 and wedding bells rang. So I guess maybe the dealer attention it may need only applies to older models. Or they are completely wrong. Who knows.

Looks real good. Now I have to replace the fuel and voltage gauges. That I'm not looking forward to. I think the fairing has to come off. Yay. I may wait until the bike goes in for the ohlins fork cartridges I'm waiting for and let them do it since the fairing has to come off then anyway. I'm pretty friendly with the service director so he won't bend me over (I hope)

The new gauges are backlit white. Looks really slick.

Don't know if the SG uses the same gauges as the RG, but here they are. I'd select your bike and look at "instruments and gauges" to be sure.

I got them from surdyke for about 20% less then HD prices and no tax or shipping.

Haven't installed the fuel or V yet... Scared to pull the fairing apart.
