We are planning a Sturgis trip from Pittsburgh for 2018. We plan on taking I-90 most the way to save time. We went five years ago and getting around Chicago was the worst part of the whole trip. I'm looking for the best way to skirt Chicago on the way out and back. thanks
I'm in Conneaut, OH I always take 90 to 80 to 29 to 90 more fuel stops, more hotels, more food
after reading all of the different routes suggested, it sounds like the 90 to 80, 29 to 90 route may a good way for us to travel. thanks everyone for all your great replies.
I go every year. Last couple years I've used this route:
I90/I80 to Exit 21 to get on I94
follow I94/I80/I294 to the I94 split - stay on I294/I80 west (there will be 1 toll booth)
follow I294/I80 to I294 split - stay on I80 west
follow I80 to I280 - take I280 west
follow I280 to I80 - take I80 west
follow I80 to I380 - take I380 west/north
follow I380 -turns into US218
follow US218 to US18 - take US18
follow US18 to I35 - take I35 north
follow I35 to I90 - take I90 west
The stretch on I94 in Indiana has rolling construction zones. Best to plan travelling that area late morning/early afternoon to avoid heavy traffic. The route through IL going this way has only 1 toll booth.
US18/US218 is mostly 4 lane divided & moves pretty well. There's a few traffic lights but you'll get through them pretty quick. You'll be back on I90 at Albert Lea, MN.
Your route takes you right past my neck of the woods, just north of Cedar Falls on 218.
If anyone takes this route, let me know in advance and we can assist if anyone needs help or anything else. Thats a pretty smooth route and if youre in a hurry, the best way to beat it out to SD...

Where are your overnight stopping points in your route ?

It varies trip to trip, depending on weather, traffic & what time we hit the road. I try to avoid overnights in IL. We tend to stay in Mitchell the night before arrival; it puts us at "the Ranch" early to mid afternoon so we have time to set up & relax a bit before dinner.
I have a sister in MN near Fairmont that we sometimes stop to visit for a couple days.
We've stopped at Urbana (Urbana Inn), Albert Lee (Best Western), Fairmont (Super 8 - great staff), Worthington (Days Inn - not good any more), Mitchell (Kelly Inn, Hampton Inn), Oacoma (Quality Inn).
