Thats a real good question I have wondered about myself. My 2014 ultra limited runs 14.5V normally when I am out on the highway. I'm on my 5th riding season with this battery and while its slightly slow to crank, it always starts. I always keep it on a battery tender when not riding. I don't know how accurate or repeatable the HD voltage gauges are, but mine is 14.5.
Interesting, I was just jumping in to do a search on battery voltage and this was the third thread down. While riding home from work I noticed the HD volt gauge was just touching 14. My power vision was showing between 13.8 and 13.9. On my 2015 Ultra this is obviously my fourth riding season. I always keep it on battery tender when not in use. Curious if this is a sign of failure or normal? Not sure why it caught my eye this afternoon but it did. I bought a small jump start pack last year, may need to charge it and start carrying it with.

Low voltage is #1 to cause starter, lights and possible other electrical issues! Changing out the battery is inevitable.. replace it..
My 2016 RGS runs at 14.5 unless im using my heated gear. The volt gauge will drop and rebound back for the most part.We have 12 volt systems but the alternator output is always higher.Your Battery if you were to test it should be around 13 volts. At 12.5 your close to a discharged Battery and at 12.0 it’s dead for sure.Every battery I’ve ever replaced has been in the summer months. Some batteries die a slow death and some go fast. I’m sure you could have your battery tested.I had a Road king that the original Battery went seven years. The Indy I took it to put a load on it and said,It might go a little longer or we can replace it now.Seven years is darn good. Thanks for listening.
