Has anyone lost a saddlebag? Meaning, riding down the road and one falling off. I haven't but my cousin has. The quarter turn mounting pins on mine seem pretty tight, but, What if?
I had to stop and get one off a friends bike.
He didn't even notice when it came off ____ ??
Mainly on older bikes there are several ways to to address this. .
Pretty common back in the day was install saddle bags guards.
Then bolt kits and various other ways.
Right, so my quarter turn pins seem pretty solid. I mean, it takes a lot of effort to turn them to the lock position. I find it hard to believe they'll pop loose on me. I'm on a 2015. What years was there an issue?
Some have. Most often they did not seat them right. HD gave up and updated them The new ones are better but bulky.
They make some that are flat and round that work better.
I haven't but my step dad has. As soon as we pulled out of his drive way and got not 100 feet down the road. He's got a '15 RK with those quarter turn pins. We rode that same day to the dealer so he could get the newer mounts. I felt bad enough that it happened to his bike that I would hate for it to happen to me.
Prior to upgrading to the screw type rachet locks I used a tiny bungee cord from harbor freight between the 2 D rings. (get a jar full for like $5) It kept them in tension and unable to rotate. Could not risk losing my Advan CVO bags, cost too much.
I did, a few months after I bought my 2014 used in 2016. I had just gotten back from a road trip, and was running an errand. I took off from a stoplight and as I shifted into 2nd gear heard a noise to my right. Looked in the mirror and there was my saddlebag tumbling on the shoulder of the road. The bag stayed latched and was functional, just scratched up.
There was a recall that included my bike, I think mostly 2014 and 2015 models. Records showed the recall had supposedly been done by the dealer around the time it was traded in (replaced the DZUS fasteners with upgraded ones). HD replaced my bag at no cost, just had to wait about 6 weeks because it was a painted part. I replaced the forward fastener in each bag with a **** bolt and lock washer so it wouldn't happen again. It takes about 30 seconds longer to remove a bag now, but worth it to me.
I went to Ace Hardware and bought 2 of these, I use one and the OEM pin on each bag. They work fine and I check them when I open the bags. Can't remember how much but fairly cheap...
