Default Headset Selection

I'm looking to go wireless for passenger communication and phone use on my 17 RGU. I will not be getting the Whim right away but want to go with HD branded headsets in case I decide to go that route later. I understand the limitations but I don't tend to use voice commands and rarely listen to music through the speakers on the bike and just run Spotify to my wired headset if I'm listening to music at all.

My question is about headset selection. The 20s and 30k dual sets are close enough in price that it's basically a wash. $30 on a 600+ set is basically nothing. The jump to the 50s is $200.

Between the 20s and 30k, which would you pick? Is the 50s really worth that much more? I highly doubt I will ever use them for bike to bike comms, it will be for passenger comm 80% of the time with the remainder being phone or music.

For what you are using them for I would think that the 20s would be fine. Let somebody else chime in though about the update possibilities if you go with the WHIM later.

For the price difference, I would go with the 30S. The mesh wireless intercom is so easy to use if you decide to use intercom with other riders.

I know you didn't ask, and it's not on your vote list, but I'll throw it out there anyway as an option. My wife & I use Cardo PackTalk Blacks (virtually the same as the Bold).
I do use it to talk to other riders when on trips but most of the use is my wife & I communicating on rides...and listening to music (Spotify or Prime) in our helmets.
I don't have a WHIM (most likely won't) as I can do 95% of what it would. About the only thing a WHIM would do that my current setup doesn't is connect to the CB wireless.
No big deal as I use the CB less & less all the time anyway...didn't use it once last year.

The Cardo's have DMC Technology (mesh), all-day battery life, clear communication, great music sound (JBL speakers), fully waterproof...what's not to like?

So nice to be without a cord regardless of what way you go.

I recently moved from the HD 20s with the Fosgate speakers to the HD 50s. The difference is significant. The 50s is cleaner, clearer, louder by quite a bit. Music, text messaging and phone are great up to 90mph. I have the WHIM and am not bluetooth'd to my phone.

Thanks for the info. As a total bluetooth noob the current plan is to go with the HD units to keep my options open but these had definitely crossed my mind.

Is there a difference in the size of the speakers? My wife finds that even with speaker pockets in her helmet the large speakers of her wired Harley headset bother her ears after a while

I can't tell you how safe it is, but my GF and I delt with the same thing with multiple helmets.
Finally, I took the ear padding out to get to the foam and used an exacto knife (razor) to create a deeper socket for the speaker to fit into. Took only minutes, was easy and now way better...

Also, we ran the 20S for years - good unit. We moved on to the Cardo Packtalk Bold since we don't use a Whim - lefty's advice is solid. Way better units with less wind noise etc.
I have one surviving 20S. It's yours for the price of shipping... PM me if interested.

I don't remember the thickness of the set you're using now, but I have an extra set of the Fosgates and they measure 1/2" thick. I believe the diameter is the same.

No worries...just tossing it out there. Like I said, the Cardo does virtually everything I need it to so a WHIM is not in my future and I didn't need to be tied to HD/Sena. Music plays in my helmet & shows up on the bike head unit. I use the bike hand controls to control the music. Phone calls show up on the head unit screen and I can choose to answer or not. I seldom, if ever take calls on the bike (it's my escape...I'm on the bike to get away from all that). Conversations are seamless as the music auto stops & starts when voice is detected.

Not sure about the Sena speakers but I just put my callipers on both my JBL Cardo speakers (25/64) and my HD wired headset speakers (27/64). So the Cardo JBL speakers are 1/16" less in thickness.
Another option you/she may want to consider but not sure if the Sena has the ability. My wife uses a set of Bose earbuds plugged into her Cardo instead of speakers in the helmet. She prefers this route.
