Sadly, cell towers ARE required if you want to use your downloaded maps as anything other than a typical paper map with no routing capabilities 🤔
I have used Maps.me and Gaia GPS quite a bit with no cellular data. Roaming charges can get quite expensive, I turn off all cellular data on my phone when I tour south of the border. I have used maps.me quite a bit when I tour. Just download all the states or areas you plan to visit on wifi before you go. It's not as flashy as Goole or Apple Maps but it will still find and route for restaurants, motels, camp sites and gas just like the rest.
Today's day trip from the AirBnB in the Rockies got rained out, so I finally had time to update my 14 SGS GPS software to the current version.
The wife and I do a LOT of cross country riding, and I like having the HD map as up to date as possible, mostly for the POI's while rolling down an Interstate at 80 mph and needing to find a gas station or restaurant near by up ahead. I can't really do that on my cell phone with gloves and while I have my current route up on Google Maps so I can see the exact route I pre-planned while getting "Turn-by-Turn" read out to me in my earbuds while listening to my Spotify Playlist. Lately, the gas stations, and even the HD Dealerships, I have pulled up on the HD Map are not the right station, not in the right location, or just completely non-existent any more. I'm hoping this update fixes a lot of all those issues.
Being able to use the controls on my handlebars is a HUGE plus while on the road to look for POI's or even zooming in a little closer when I get into city traffic because it's hard to zoom in on the phone. I like running both, my Google Maps and HD Maps at the same time sometimes to get a little different perspective of view because the HD Map is straight down birdseye, and the Google Map is more of an elevated viewpoint, like from a small plane or something.
I know it's $150, but "FOR ME", it's worth it. I use it a lot. For some of you others? Maybe not so much. I get that..........

Quick question: not sure if you were able to use your updated map yet, does new update still say "Exit the highway" or does it actually tell you Exit No/Street name to take an exit ? Thanks
You use a USB flash drive to create the thumb print for your bike. Go back buy your copy down load it to the same usb drive.
Put it in your bike and it loads. It can not be used on any other bike. Save the flash drive in case you ever mess up what you have.
I update date mine before going to Shark week. I will never allow apple or Giggle to track me I go to great length to block them and keep them out of my life. The Maps work.
The latest update did well around DC and south to VA.
On the way home it was a bit off on HY 35N in WVA. It showed me in a field for a good while and 35 off to the east the north me.
I knew Chillicothe was it the direction I was going and it all worked out. I can still read a map. And could go coast to coast with out GPS or map.
My2011 Gramin 42 still gives me updates few times a year free.

Still rained out here. Gotta ride to Casper WY tomorrow rain/shine, lol. I'll try to look then. Keep in mind I run no audio from the HD GPS, only from my Google Maps.

Thanks. Ride safe and looking forward to your review. Not sure why they would have a program just say “exit the highway” instead of actual street name or exit number.
I know that the street name that you need to exit on to shows up on the screen as you approach your exit, but like I mentioned, I have the volume off so don't know if there was any audible alert on the older version. I'll try it with the volume up now with the new version and see if I can to see/hear what it says, or doesn't say, now tho.
Yea the HD instructions do leave a bit to be desired. Its either imaps or google maps that tell you the best lane to exit onto as well. HD hopes you figure it out yourself.
Last real long trip I took, to the Beartooth Rally in Red Lodge, Mt., there was a couple times it led me off course when trying to find my campground. Road directions, like which highway, or surface road to Red Lodge were fine, but those campgrounds were a little off the main roads, and it was pretty clueless.
