Many people replace the batteries annually, others keep a spare battery in their saddle bag or other storage location. Personally, I despise the security system and if there is ever a chance to have the bike put in the service mode, without having an additional 1/2 shop hour added to the bill, I will do it. While 99% of security problems are OWNER factor, dead FOB battery, FAILURE to set a PIN and learn how to use it, antenna lead broken from the module during maintenance, the reality is that if a pro wants your bike, he will get it. The ignition/fork lock will deter casual joy riders.
Since you are stuck with it, choose one of the above options AND set your PIN and learn how to use it.

I've been changing them every 2 years, and was just curious to see if perhaps I was over/under doing it.
If you ever ride through Vegas, I'll turn off your security for you.
Every spring I change mine, and my wife's, and buy brand new spare batteries to store in the saddlebags. Security pins come up quite often on this forum, as others have said, make sure you set yours, and know how to use it if you need to!
I have a 2015 Ultra Limited. I have replaced the FOB battery twice since I purchased the bike new in 2015.
Have never once had any kind of FOB or security issue.
But if the FOB battery was to ever die on me while out riding, I know exactly what my PIN is and how to use it.
I have also used the PIN a few times even though I didn't really need too, just to make sure the process works.
