Default New Touring Question

My fiance and I are new touring. We just did a 650 mile trip this weekend and loved it. We are planning more trips but could use a little help. My question is what is good "average" day of touring and is it measured by mileage or hours in the saddle. Obviously, 80mph hour down the interstate is going to cover many more miles than the same amount of time on back roads.

That depends on your goals of the day; Recent trip was 600 miles in 11.5 hours-needed to be somewhere by certain time, stopped on average 150-175 miles for gas-stretch and quick stop; Breakfeast ride with group was 145 miles rt; As you plan your trips, you will adjust for the areas, climate; Highways are fast but boring( but maybe the only way to get to the fun spots);

There aren't any rules. If you're smiling at the end of the day, you did good.

The best long distance trips I have had were to take it as it comes without pushing it. Ride until you feel like calling it a day, then find someplace to chill. Get up and out early the next day and repeat. Pushing it to try to achieve a waypoint by a certain time takes the fun out of it. JMHO

A trip thru Nevada doing 80+ on the open road makes 500 mile days easy, 250 miles on the coast Hwy is enough in a day, get the idea?

Depends on weather & local ambient air temperature...crossing the Nevada & Arizona dessert on the way to Sturgis, had to hydrate every hour of riding, roughly 60 miles...once the temps got a little cooler, then 150 miles between stops is typical...

As others have said, there really is no hard and fast rule regarding how many miles you should do in a day. It depends on so many things, you simply can't predict it. Over the years I have gotten away from setting schedules and "set" amount of miles and time. It puts undo pressure and stress on me to make the endpoint that I used to set for myself. The whole idea is to enjoy the ride, the scenery, new places, new folks, food, etc. If I'm hauling butt down the road because I'm not on pace for a preset stop or schedule it just defeats my purpose for riding. I have done 600+ mile days and could have gone many more because I felt good, rested, and comfortable. Other times I have pulled over and rested or gotten a room after only 300 miles because my back hurt, the weather was crap or I just plain didn't feel like doing anymore. Do whatever it is YOU guys can handle and enjoy along the way.

Wife and I took our bikes out for a 700 mile round trip last month. Took 4 days.....All about quality, not quantity.
