Anyone had success reshaping a SG seat or any seat for that matter? I love this big bear performance seat but not the price tag. Any dos or don'ts or maybes or any advice. I have a couple SG seats to make an attempt to reshape one.
I have done many trying to get one that is comfortable and have had success with a couple. I use an electric knife to do the basic shaping after spending a lot of time drawing on the foam where I want to cut and shape. then I use 40 grit sandpaper to get it to the finished shape. TAKE YOUR TIME. I wish you could buy memory foam in small amounts because you can get e more comfortable seat with it.
I have a 14 Limited and I Narrowed the Thigh area 1 inch on each side. Plus I added 1 inch of memory foam under the existing. Its pretty simple, all you need is a staple gun, hack saw, file and some foam. The seat was too wide for me, so I took it off and pulled the staples that were attaching the leather to the seat. I peeled the leather and foam back to expose the frame (plastic) of the seat. Then I used a hack saw to trim off 1 inch of the seat where my thighs met. I purchased a kneeling pad(Memory Foam), used for being on your knees from Walmart garden shop for about $12. Trimmed the pad to fit the seat and put it under the existing foam. Then I put the leather back over the seat and stretched it out and re-stapled it. Its pretty simple and a lot more comfortable. The foam pad does not have to be the same size of the seat. It only has to be located where your Buns sit. Because the extra foam is beneath the molded foam, you can't tell it has been added. Good luck.
Thank you guys for your input I'm gonna give it a shot. Like Happyharley the seat is too wide, this an issue with most stock seats iv seen. I know it not magic just never tried upholstery related works and not sure of the limitations or maybe the golden rules of dos and don'ts. Who knows i may like it lol. Happy did you take any photos?
No, I didn't take any Pics. Don't be afraid to try it. Use a flat screwdriver to lift the staples and a pair of pliers to remove them. Do your trimming, stuff your foam under the existing and re-staple. I only removed the staples to the backrest, not the whole seat. You don't need a very big piece of foam for your buns.
I’ve done mods to seats on my motocross bikes as most have said they’ve done here. Only issue I had was Re-stapling the cover to the base. Depending on your stapler, it may be difficult to get into some areas, or deep enough to sit flat while driving staples in. Nothing like finding out after it’s apart...guess how I know
