I keep a small "handlebar" bag attached all the time. Big enough to keep my garage door opener, a few tools, a phone, etc. You can spend from $15 to $150 depending on what does it for you.

I've got one of those on top of the handlebars of my Sportster. It's great for the small everyday ride items, although I still use a removable large bag (soft trunk) on the back of my sissy bar (sits on the luggage rack) for stuff like getting the groceries, if my wife or daughter says I need X can you go get it for me?
If I get rid of the Sportster I can use the same handlebar bag and soft trunk on the Softail. I might even be able to use the same windscreen, just with different mounts for it. Still though, it's a slipstreamer style, would probably look better with a HD shield style. Although it doesn't look traditional, the slipstreamer has done an excellent job of stabilizing the bike at high speeds. If I sell the Sportster I wouldn't get much money for it and I only pay 80 a year for full coverage. The other option is selling the old Ultra.
I will have to decide however if I'm done with LD touring, because the Ultra is great for that. Decisions decisions. If only I hadn't gone to that demo days I wouldn't be tempted to make a change.
