Your call. But personally, I wouldn't do it. I'd have it properly chemically dechromed (expensive) and then prepped and powder coated.

By the way....if you ever want anything properly ceramic (Cerakote) coated (black or any other colour) then Wes at HiSpec Coatings is your man. Hi Spec Coatings

I didn’t realise powder was a poor finish? Puttnutt24s powdered coated parts look pretty smart to me?
Powdercoat is a great finish.....but not for stuff that gets really hot unless you use very specialised chemicals and processes. If you want it to get hot, then look at proper ceramic coating - Cerakote or equivalent which is rated for exhaust manifolds and hotter. (Note: this is NOT the same as you hear about people using as protectant on their paint jobs).

Above is correct way to do that. I did powdercoat over chrome and it was not pretty any serious shop doing it will strip chrome first by blasting it with media and no it is not expensive and not it is not weak finish it is actually really durable option and looks great if done right.

Thanks for all the advice. I’ll get in contact with a few more shops and ask about the process for stripping chrome etc and see if they plan to do this first.

see, that’s why I love this forum... wealth of knowledge. Thanks guys.

Thats actually where i got the idea, but as i haven't had this done before (only paint) im unsure of any hidden considerations to factor in.

You can powder coat over chrome without removing the chrome, just sandblasted, done that several times and also my heatshields are powder coated for over 3 years now, the exhaust itself I would not recommend but the heatshields is no prob.
Also if you want to remove the chrome that is no rocket science and can be done at home , I prefer outside do . I go even further than that, you can even reuse the chrome again to put on something els if you want. It can be done with a battery
charger and some household products. I have the list here if interested and there is plenty of info on YT.

Hey Tomo
have you had it done yet? I'm at the same stage trying to decide.
i had been talking with my local specialist and he advised to go with paint rather than powder so I maybe will have the front forks etc painted and other bits powder coated.
i have taken some parts to a local powder coaters for advice and he said it wouldn't be a problem to go over the chrome.
i also in the U.K.

There are a couple parts on my bike that I could only get in Crome that I had powder coated. They have been holding up very well.

You want this chrome blasted if you want to do it right. I will consider shop that dont remove chrome half *** shop but sure half *** job can be done too. Your powdercoater wants to do less for more so sure will tell you it can be done. Proper way would be blasting with soft media (like nutshells or something similar) not sand as this is too harsh and you dont want pitting.

As far as paint vs coat on lower legs powder coat is definitely better idea as powder is a bit softer (like really hard rubber) and you dont want really hard coat (like paint) to be hit with small rocks as this will damage it way easier. There is a reason MoCo does powder on wheels, lower legs and frame but yes you can paint it too if you really want, you might just notice more damage overtime comparing to powder.

Just my 2 cents.
