First bike for a big dude

I always recommend new riders and riders that are rusty take the MSF class. Its great. I consider myself an advanced/technical rider and I take it every few years or pickup a class from the local highway patrol.
For a dude as big as you, the Heritage is fine. Its a lovely bike by ANY standard. Beginners or not. Where you get into trouble are the light metric bikes where **** can get real, real fast!
