Hello guys I need your help. Unfortunately, it looks like my Softtail Slim may be outside during this Ohio winter. I need suggestions on everything I can do to prepare for this so my bike comes out alive. I am really worried. Any suggestions on the best cover? Do I put anything in the engine? Any ideas you all have would be much appreciated.
Oh the humanity! Rent a 5X10 storage unit. Probably cost you 300 bucks for 6 months. You'll sleep a lot better. Very nice bike btw. Did your front fender fall off?
Cycleshell however it can take a little while for delivery, they are made to order. My Heritage is in one at the moment.
You’ll need a battery tender no matter the cover you choose.
Your local dealer must offer storage right? Rent a storage unit. I see indoor storage advertised alot on Craigslist. Dont you have any friends? Friends don't let friends store their bikes outside. Lol. You have the means to buy a harley so you have a couple bucks to store your bike. Not to rub it in but mine and the wife's come right inside in the house for the winter. We have a double living room that my wife has dubbed "the bike room". Hers will be coming in tomorrow and I try to make it until around Thanksgiving or the first time they salt the roads...just dodged that bullet yesterday. Theres solutions you just gotta put in a little work...
My dealer offers winter storage. Mine was free last year, as they were doing some service work on it over the winter anyhow. They otherwise would charge $200. for heated winter storage w/a battery tender hooked up on it until April or thereabouts. Check it out.
I ride my bikes through the winter, even when there's salt on the roads. I have recently invested in heated kit, which is amazing. You get some beautiful winter days and memorable rides.
I wash the bikes after a ride, usually with a waterless wash spray and carefully spray / wipe with acf 50 a couple of times during the season. Put it on any metal finishes and all fastenings (including exhaust). Then spray the front and underside of the engine with GT85. Doesn't take long. Bikes are like new in the spring. I use these treatments throughout the year, as I live on an island attached to the mainland by a causeway which floods with the tide. That tarmac is constantly impregnated with salt. Not yet had a bike get corrosion.
Only time I don't ride is when it's icy. I enjoy my winter rides. I'm definitely in a lighter mood the rest of the day!
