I never thought it would be this damn hard to find something! I have a 19" HD Compact Windshield and took it apart since I getting the mounting brackets powder coated Gloss Black; however, I want to replace the OEM stainless bolts with Black ones and I cannot find them anywhere! I do not know the size and HD does not say what they are in the instructions. Can anyone help? There are 9 bolts (with acorn nuts) of which 7 are one length and 2 another.
If you cant find black ones, mount the shield up and tape off areas around nuts and bolts and spray or can use a brush to apply black plastidip. If need to remove, can peel off the plastidip.
If memory serves I believe the windshield screws are 12-24 UNC. This is not a common size and few outlets stock them. In 39 years of design engineering I dont believe I ever specified them for anything. I would use either #10 or 1/4.
I found some bolts at Ace albeit not the same style but they will work: 10-32 is the size. And I found some acorns on ebay.
While they may work, they're NOT the correct size. The correct size is #12-24UNC x length. That's a screw with a major diameter of .216" and 24 threads per inch.
For everyone's information, number series machine screws increase in diameter by .013" for each increasing number. For example:
size 00=.047" dia.
size 0=.060" dia.
size 1=.073" dia.
size 2=.086" dia.
size 3=.099" dia.
size 4=.112" dia.
size 5=.125" dia.
size 6=.138" dia.
size 8=.164" dia.
size 10=.190" dia.
size 12=.216" dia.
size 14=.242" dia.- very rare, as it's nearly the same as 1/4. Don't make the mistake of misreading a "14-28" tap as "1/4-28" and trying to install a 1/4-28 screw in that tapped hole. Don't ask me how I know this. LOL.
Route66Mods is going to coat them for me in Gloss Black - shipping them tomorrow. I just got the windshield mounting brackets back in Gloss Black and my dark tint Freedom Shield also arrived...it will look nice when all back together and on my 2020 Anniversary Fatty.
