Default HD Performance Kits / Stages

I'm in the market for an FXLRS, either a 2020 dealer owned with less than 100 miles or a new 2022 FXLRS. I am leaning towards the 2020 because it is 5k cheaper, which i would invest some or all of in performance upgrades. Funny my wife doesn't necessarily think 'invest' is the correct term in my previous statement ..but i digress .. lol. Questions for the forum ... there are varying stages to HD performance upgrades, and I'm assuming each stage builds off of the previous stage, is there a specific reason why people upgrade in stages? Is it recommended to upgrade in stages or does it come down to personal preference on how much HP/TRQ you want or how much HP/TRQ you can afford at the time?

If you had the extra $5k would you go all in on a preconfigured HD Performance kit or would you upgrade in increments? In the past I've never upgraded or given much thought to upgrading more than my Exhaust, Air Filter and Tuner ...... and that was many years ago, so I'm pretty much relearning everything.

Thanks in advance for your patience.

bank the money, ride the bike for a few months, then decide what you want to do.

Extra 5k beyond what I have right now? OR 5K from Stock?
Personally from stock, I'm sticking with Stage 2 engine parts with the Aluminium manifold, and then I'm upgrading other stuff for durability or performance in other aspects.
Stage 2 for an M8 for me: KN Air filter/aircleaner, Exhaust, Cam, Oilpump and Camplate, Compensator ramp, Pushrods, Tappets, SnS tappet cuffs, Tuner, Vented transmission case.
After that? I'd want SnS Rocker Arm studs and shafts, Evolution Clutch basket, 34 tooth pully, 7 Speed Baker Transmission.

That's as far as I'd go with engine work.

5K from stock then:
KN Air filter/aircleaner, Exhaust, Cam, Compensator ramp, Pushrods, Tappets, SnS tappet cuffs, Tuner, Mod your own Vented transmission.
Should be easily doable in 5K, and still have money left over if you do the install yourself.

As you don't mention your riding experience or style. Ride it, see what you think and do your research here . THEN, figure out what you want.

OP, was the new 2022 FXLRS the 117ci engine option? If it is, I'm pretty sure the 117 still comes with the "CVO cam" and also their heavy breather. Is it worth $5k? Maybe not...

P.S. @Father_Futile looks to be your 6th-ish post. Welcome to the forum!
