Cotter Circle VS pin
on my tourer and every other bike I've ever owned it's usually a COTTER PIN

...noticed at the weekend and thought a previous mechanic had used a busted keyring to fasten!
Happend to be at the dealer and all softails seemed to have Circles
{puzzled}
heck John Deere even uses them on hay balers. Used to hold on a washer and chain on a mount that is to activate the kicker bar that rolls the bale away from the baler, and made to be used as a disconnect. since you can unhook that chain/ clip to not use the kicker bar for like when youre in hill country or have a fragile crop youre baking. Although a regular cotter pin IS more secure for that specific application, we have lost a couple of those clips. Although I think the HD ones are much more secure.
The other option for reusable would be an 'R' type clip.
A side note, as an engineering apprentice I was taught that the below is a cotter pin which is used as a wedge type securing for things such a British motorcycle kick start levers and bicycle pedals and the other is a split (cotter) pin to avoid confusion!
