Went and fitted cruise control this morning, went well(ish), buttoned everything up, all switch's, lights and indicators work as they should, cruise control was coded to ECU and is accepting inputs, so off I pop for a test ride, except I can't, because it's doing........
It's not been touched over the winter and rode in just fine last year, it has been getting a weeks worth of charge every month, but to me this sounds like the starter isn't getting enough juice due to a knackered / low battery (original on a 2018 bike as far as I can tell) rather than the starter itself having crapped the bed, what do you reckon?

I think you found the solution. I would change a 2018 battery.
No point. you’re doing more harm than good by over charging. If in storage, charge up until it’s at peak voltage then unplug/ remove charger. And leave it alone for a month, check for voltage drop with a multimeter before charging again. Unless your charger stops charging and doesn’t “float” charge. Even then leaving it on a week at a time is silly.
You got 5 years out of it. Long full life of a Harley battery. Change it and be happy it lived that long.
best battery practice that I’ve been using and was told to try by a batteries + bulbs store owner, is to fully charge a battery before installation/ use. Charge it full once a month even if you’re using it within that month. Don’t over charge, and do not over discharge and leave it dead. Recharge it as soon as the battery is cooled to ambient temp. And same goes for charging normally, don’t charge while the battery is hot from just riding/ driving. Heat kills batteries. He claimed to still have the original battery in his 2014 Chevy Impala when I purchased my motorcycle battery from him in mid 2022. And since I’ve implemented the same practices on all automotive batteries at my house.

“Weeks worth of charge every month”

In 20+ years of riding this will be the second battery I've had to change, my charger will 'maintain' but I don't like leaving it plugged in 24/7.
I'll chuck a new un at it.

Like most of a certain age we have battery chargers that will cook a battery if left connected. The chargers today are maintainers and have the correct intelligence and programming to stop charging when it detects the battery is charged to the voltage it is programmed to maintain. Some are set at 14.4 volts some at 14.7 volts and Optimate uses 13.6 volts to maintain a battery once it has done its tests.
2 things...
1. Yep sounds like the battery - I replaced mine with an HD Lithium LiFe 7Ah Battery - the weight saving is staggering!
2. Get a Battery Conditioner (or Smart Charger) as opposed to a Battery Charger - the former does everything automatically and you can leave it plugged-in and permanently switched on safely - I went with a NOCO Genius5UK, Smart Charger (+ adapter).

Battery ordered, a nice new Motobatt Hybrid is winging its way to me

No, I just don't like a battery sitting at full charge 24/7, I like to let it cycle up and down a bit, nothing scientific about it, and beside electricity ain't cheap
