Default Ape Hangers?

I picked up a new to me '21 Heritage Classic 107 and am getting it delivered next week. It's been more than a few years since I've had my seat on a motorcycle - had a Suzuki 550 waaay back in the day and a (now ex-) wife who would not have 'allowed' a motorcycle.

This machine has ape hangers on it and I'm curious about your experience with them. They felt OK in the showroom, but I'm wondering what they'll be like when I hit the road for any length of time. I'll mostly be using the bike to take trips around Michigan, heading up north to enjoy the outdoors.

Are there any safety concerns with them, do your arms/shoulders get tired after a couple hours? Anything else you want to say about them?

I use 12" apes because of shoulder issues. Go out and ride a few 100 miles If you don't like them change them,

Welcome to the Forum. I ask a question about fast cornering and have yet to get anyone thought on the learning curve when say you get up to level arms.

Be interested in what you hear here.

Without knowing anything other than the machine has ape hangers, it’s impossible to know if they are going to affect your arms and shoulders. As far as safety, many, many riders install apes that are not unsafe, myself included.

So ape hangers are good for a bad shoulder? I do have problems from an old injury in my one shoulder so maybe this is a good thing?

The last statement is more than fair; I'm just looking for others' experience. Appreciate your input.

They can be good. My fists are nipple high on my Wide Glide and I'm comfortable. The Ultra bars are lower and hurt my left shoulder at first. I stuck it out and got used to it though. I don't want taller bars that put my hands in the wind.

Can you still turn the bars full lock at slow speed and swerve hard to miss a stray ladder on the freeway? If you can, and the bars are comfortable, you're fine.

Good info, thanks. I'm anxious to get on the road with it and wasn't sure about the bars. Sounds like they'll be fine - or not - in any case that seems to be something easily remedied.

18 inch on 6 inch risers. Most depends on your height and reach. I'm only 5' 9 " and I LOVE them!

I'm somewhat on the tall side - just shy of six feet with a trick shoulder. Also just getting back into motorcycles and I like to find things out from those who know when I'm not very knowledgeable in an area. Part of my profession is risk management so I prefer to understand what I'm getting into.

Appreciate the response.

Without a windshield tall apes will have you fighting the wind above 60 mph. You have to pull on the bars at high speeds.
