Actually, it's not just a Heritage question it's more of a 114 owner's question. Putting some break in miles on my new Heritage, this time I'm going by what the service manager said to do. Cruising along in 5th or 6th gear and rolling on I hear a noise at first sounded like a faint pinging, I'm keeping my RPMs down but definitely not lugging it and sometimes I hear it rolling off the throttle. I was curious after trying to repeat it that maybe it's coming from the throttle body like maybe the servo motor that opens and closes the butterfly. Bike runs great, I will have them look and listen when I take it in for the first service. Anyone heard this on their bike or know of this noise. I have access to 93 octane premium and that's what's in it. My Challenger would ping sometimes, and this really doesn't sound the same. Not a huge deal but it never hurts to ask around. Great machine very happy with the 114.

Curious why you'd listen to the service manager over following the owner's manual? And I would say that 2500 rpms could very definitely be lugging given head winds, hills, weight of the rider, etc. The noise you're describing sounds like lugging to me.
I have a completely standard 114 Heritage Classic purchased late 2023 with now about 6k kms (4k miles) and am regularly noticing pinging near the same revs you describe (2500). Seems noticeable on hotter days, 30C+ (86F+) when the bike has been at running temp for a considerable time. Bike doesn’t need much load at all to ping and I ride solo, a relatively light weight at 78kg (172lb). I’ve been using the recommended 95RON premium unleaded for over here in Aus, but am now reigned to just running our highest premium unleaded 98RON and see if it improves. The bike doesn’t seem to be lugging but the pinging indicates otherwise, seems the ignition timing can’t adjust quick enough at this point to avoid the pinging. I think it also highlights how lean these engines are running in the standard configuration to meet the imposed emissions requirements. So another option is changing the fuelling to richen it up under these circumstances. Of course if you just drop it down a gear and run it harder it goes away. The standard crankcase ventilation system probably isn’t helping either, adding carbon buildup to the piston crown & chamber, slowly increasing the compression ratio over time. I’ve concluded, under all these circumstances, these engines in standard configuration really need to run closer to 3000rpm minimum. 🤔🤞🍻
