Signed on to hear about a 25. Never seen a Harley that you didn't have to remove one end since both fittings have right hand threads.
Metrics have a right hand and a left hand thread on their shift rod.
Threads however are for minor changes. Index the lever spline for big changes. And be sure to tighten properly to service manual spec and proper loctite on the lever fastener.
Seen numerous threads on here with the spline striped. And the reason is not tighten it correctly.

You loosen both lock nuts, then remove it from the foot shifter end, then turn both ends outward or inward the same number of turns. Hand tighten the two nuts, put it back on the foot shift end, then tighten the two lock nuts snug.
There are some aftermarket manufacturers that have a righthand thread on one end and a lefthand thread on the other. In those cases you just loosen the nuts and turn the rod to lengthen or shorten.
I have shift linkages on my bikes from Thrashen Supply, they have left and right threads on their linkages.
