I put a really nice tank/fender set from a 1993 FXR that I bought from Ebay on my 1987 FXR. The tank already had a worn place down to bare metal where the seat had rubbed on the tab. I touched up the rubbed area and cut a piece of scrap rubber sheeting to fit the top of the tab (I put another piece of rubber under the tab when I had mounted the tank). Now the seat at least hits the rubber rather than the tank directly, hopefully it'll protect it from further wear.

Thanks to all who have posted on this thread. Been reading this thread for the last three days, and now I'm up to speed. Now to start my list for the winter. I'm layed off but with the help of this thread (and my MIG and torch) I'm gonna have some fun.
When I put on the side mount plate I started having troubles with cars coming up on me real fast and realized that the low side mounted light made me look farther away than I really was so I decided to make the rear blinkers running/flashers like the fronts. I bought a set of fronts off eBay and took the guts out of them. Had to drill out the rear stems two sizes. Be careful not to drill into the threads. I used a press and vise. This allowed the three wires to fit. Mount the signals back on the bike. Referring to your manual, splice into the running light signal to the rear brake/running light and wire the other two wires to ground and flashers as stock and you have running lights on the back.
Very nice buelrider, but there is a minor problem when you do that. You really should change the lens to red or use a red bulb. In many states amber lights in the rear are illegal for use as running lights. Turn signals are fine, but running lights can be a no-no.
I am not sure were I got these from, but here's a couple of wiring diagrams that show two ways to do the wiring. They show a switch in the line that's not really needed unless you keep the amber lenses. With it in the line it will allow you to turn them off if the state you happen to be in doesn't allow amber running lights.
HOGGlider,
Thanks for the idea for moving the mirrors under the grips, but a little (2 seconds) investigation informs me that it can't be done with the bars I have. When the bars are turned all the way, like parking.
There is very little room between the tank and the grips. Far too little to fit anything like normal sized mirrors.
I had the same problem when I moved my mirror underneath. They want to hit the tank when turned to the extreme, and was crowding the turn signals. Sine they are stock, I am going to try some bending to make it work. If all fail, I will try to find something to replace them with.
I don't think even bending the stems will help with mine.
I just went out into the garage and took this pic of the bars in the "parked" position.
You can see there's less than 2" between the bottom of the clutch lever housing and the top of the gas gauge and only a little more to the top of the tank.
It seems that no matter how I tried to bend or fool around with the stems the mirrors will hit at least the side of the tank unless I extend the stems far enough that the mirrors (stock sized ones) would extend past the end of the grips.
Maybe this winter I'll take some time to look around for a smaller pair.
I recently built a Sidemount for my FXD.
Bent a flat into an L shape, Srilled a 3/4" Hole for the Axle.
Used another flat as the plate holder, drilled and riveted it together,
The Diamond tail light module cost me $40.
(Also pictured is the Inspection sticker plate seen in the previous post)
Now that the rear end is cleaned up a little, a fender mod is in order!
