I'd say that 60 in 5th is definitely around 2500 rpm based on what you're seeing at 70. Do you remember if that's what it was?
Think it was more like 2400

That is strange. My engine was turning over slower than I thought on my way home yesterday. Amazing how low-end torque can fool you.

Is there a general rule of thumb for highway miles during break in?

Vary your speed - don't keep it at one steady rpm/speed.... change gears, speed up, slow down... not all real quick mind you.... but every few miles.

Maybe my 06 is geared differently from the later models. Checked tonite on a ride over to the eastern shore. At 3000 rpm I'm at 72 mph,70 mph is about 2900 rpm. I'm running a 180 tire, the profile may be a little lower, guess that could make a tad of difference.

Anyway,my bike is happy.

Good Luck

Tom

Default gearing...

It could be set up to get the "outlaws" out of more tickets. Radar is radar, and there's no way a county mountie will not be taking pictures when you go by. But the sound of a modern twin cam running 90+ sounds milder than a 30 year old harley running 40. With that in mind, the modern day engines should rack up some impressive mileage and lifespans. Every bike has that sweet spot, for some of the "outlaw" types, it's alot faster than I'll ever like to run.

Seems like I remember reading somewhere that the 06s with the TC88 are geared quite a bit lower than the 07-09 bikes with the TC96. That would account for your higher rpms.

Tom, I've posted this a few times.

Yes our 06s have more desirable, in my opinion, gearing..........

.
.
.
......rear sprocket......
.............the 006 domestic is 70 tooth.
.......the 007 up domestic is
66 tooth

.....the 006 international is 68 tooth.
.....the 007 international is 64 tooth.
.
.
.
....gear........006.......
007 and up....005 back

....1st.......9.876......
9.312......10.11.......1st
....2nd.......6.81.......
6.421.......6.958......2nd
....3rd.......5.064......
4.774.......4.953......3rd
....4th.......4.164......
3.926.......3.862......4th
....5th.......3.477......
3.279.......3.15........5th
....6th.......2.96........
2.79.......no
.
.
.
.........drive belt for 006 domestic is 133 teeth
.........drive belt for 007 domestic is
131 teeth

..drive belt for 006 international is 132 teeth
..drive belt for 007
international is 130 teeth
.
.
.

edited to add.....

difference in the 06 and the 07 up is

in the rear sprocket, not the transmission

Well it looks like my tach works right then, with the different sprockets between the 06 and 08. I was a little worried about my tach, with the issue I had with it when I first put it on.
