I've always wondered what "long distance/steady RPM" is by definition. I want to get to the 1000 mile service as quickly as possible (within 2 weeks) because I've got a longgggg drive from MI to NC.
Is there a general rule of thumb for highway miles during break in?
Vary your speed - don't keep it at one steady rpm/speed.... change gears, speed up, slow down... not all real quick mind you.... but every few miles.
Maybe my 06 is geared differently from the later models. Checked tonite on a ride over to the eastern shore. At 3000 rpm I'm at 72 mph,70 mph is about 2900 rpm. I'm running a 180 tire, the profile may be a little lower, guess that could make a tad of difference.
It could be set up to get the "outlaws" out of more tickets. Radar is radar, and there's no way a county mountie will not be taking pictures when you go by. But the sound of a modern twin cam running 90+ sounds milder than a 30 year old harley running 40. With that in mind, the modern day engines should rack up some impressive mileage and lifespans. Every bike has that sweet spot, for some of the "outlaw" types, it's alot faster than I'll ever like to run.

Seems like I remember reading somewhere that the 06s with the TC88 are geared quite a bit lower than the 07-09 bikes with the TC96. That would account for your higher rpms.

difference in the 06 and the 07 up is
in the rear sprocket, not the transmission
Well it looks like my tach works right then, with the different sprockets between the 06 and 08. I was a little worried about my tach, with the issue I had with it when I first put it on.
