Need some information. I have a stage 1 kit on my EGC and was wondering - do you wash your air filters and if you do how often or do you just replace them? Thanks!
follow mfgr's recomendations. These filter's that use oil on the filter media do so to trap dust. These filters work on impingment and the oil is part of the equation.
No need to replace the filter. The filter can be re-used many times if properly cleaned and oiled. If you clean and do not oil the filter the material will dry out which will shorten life expectancy. Here are a few kits you can use. http://www.knfilters.com/clningacc.htm
Keep in mind this applies to after market high performance filters, not the paper type that comes with the bike from the factory.
MAINTENANCE
Air Cleaner Element Maintenance
NOTES
This is a dry air filter. Do not apply oil to the filter element.
When servicing the air cleaner, apply Loctite 243 (blue) to
threads of all fasteners.
1. Remove air cleaner cover and inspect
the filter element every 5000 mi (8000 km), or more
often under dusty conditions.
2. Clean filter element as follows:
a. Remove and wash element by immersing it, on edge,
in a shallow pan containing enough Air
Cleaner/Degreaser to cover no more than 3/4 the
depth of the filter pleats. Do not let dirty solution get
inside the element. Carefully "roll" the element in the
solution around its perimeter until the entire outer
surface of the filter pleats has been soaked.
b. Remove filter element from cleaner/degreaser and
allow five minutes for the cleaner to dissolve the dirt.
c. From the inside out, rinse the element with cold water.
Shake off excess water, and allow the element to air
dry. Do not dry with compressed air.
3. Install air cleaner element and cover.
i had a friend buy the stage 1 from harley last week and it also had a k&n in it. i was surprised.
on my stage 1 filter, i take it off first when i service my bike. spray it down good with simple green and let it soak a bit. then i wash it from the inside. shake it dry and let it sit in the sun while i do the service. its the last thing i put back on. i also have a small blow dryer(hair) that iuse to make sure thats its good and dry.
I'm not talking about the breather or kit, I'm talking about the filter. Screaming Eagle makes paper filters and they don't use oil. It's just paper, there is no mesh around it like the K&N. The newer ones are paper anyway, can't remember what the older ones were.
