Default Hawg Wired Blown Speakers

I had a full Hawg Wired system on my Road Glide CVO loved it. Two DX574 up front and two DX574 in the bags. Ran it with two RS400 amps. Here again, loved it. Loudest and cleanest system in the world.

Now I got a street glide. First thing I did was replace both speakers upfront with ZX654's and running it with one RS400 amp.

Blewout those speakers about 3 months ago. Hawk Wired sent me new ones.

Just blew out the right speaker today! Amp is turned way down, and it really pisses me off to say the least. I have no idea why this is happening.

I know they have a great product. I use to beat them pretty hard on my road glide.

I am running a Pioneer AVH-7500 deck that honestly I am not very happy with. Any other suggestions there?

Not a huge Hawg wired fan but your speakers and amp appear to be very compatible. No reason you should be blowing speakers. Those speakers have crossovers that should prevent your speakers from blowing. Most crossovers will shut the speaker down before it gets to the point of damaging the speaker itself.

When you were running your 5x7's they were rated at 70 RMS per speaker. Your new 6.5 speakers are rated at 100 RMS. Conversely they are not going to be as loud with the RS400 as your 5x7's were. Turning those speakers up to achieve the same volume as the 5x7's would cause distortion and eventually blow your speakers IMO. The amp RMS always needs to be 50 to 100 watts over the speaker RMS. The standard rule is 1.6 to 2.5 x the speaker RMS. In other words if you have a 75 watt RMS speaker. You take 75 x 1.6 = 120 watts minimum RMS for your AMP. For Hip Hop and heavy bass notes that value would be 75 x 2.5. 4 ohm speakers need power to sound good. That's one reason Biketronics powers all their speakers with an amp that produces 180 watts RMS per speaker. They figured it out a long time ago. LOL!! Now most people will dispute what I have said here. They will say that you are fine as long as the speaker RMS matches the amp RMS. Which is true. . . IN A CAR!! A Bike is an entirely different animal with the wind noise, loud pipes and other elements. Anyway that's my.02. on the subject.

If it were me I would send the blown speaker back to Hawg wired for replacement. Sell the set when you get em back and purchase a set of 7.1's from biketronics to go in your fairing. Better quality and better sounding speaker with a lifetime guarantee. I've heard both speakers side by side. Biketronics wins hands down. There is no comparison.
Then think about replacing your amp with a more powerful amp. or go to a two/four ohm compatible amp and go with 2 ohm speakers. If you are not into FM radio the Power Acoustic RZ4.2000D with the 7.1's is a beast or the Cerwin Vega B2 two channel amp with those same speakers. Pure BEAST mode. lol

Probably not what you want to hear. But it's my experience over the years with this stuff. Your pioneer AVH-7500 has good reviews. Why are you not happy with it?

Thank! Actually, it's exactly what I wanted to hear. Are those amps bike amps or car amps?

The pioneer unit has a 8 band eq. Too dang hard for me to use. I am thinking i have it tunes wrong. Maybe that's why this setup keeps blowing?

+1 with Gann.

Looking at the prices of the Hawg Wired stuff, if that was my budget I wouldn’t think twice and go with Biketronics. Life time warranty is hard to beat. You could always go with the RZ42000 amp and save some cash. I had one and it’s a very powerful and sound coming from it is terrific. It’s a car amp....you can find it at Sonic Electronics for about 110.00 bucks. Just take the side rails off for it to fit above your radio. Since you have an after market HU you make need a bracket so that the amp sits high enough so that it can slide in above the radio. Take a tad bit of work.....but you save some cash and it sounds great --- OR, spend some more get the BT.

I never got into the "Car Amp" "Bike Amp" thing. An amp is an amp. period. It either has power or it doesn't. It either fits in the bike or it doesn't. Vendors use the car amp bike amp thing to charge you more money for a so called "specialty" bike amp.

Forget about the Car and the Bike. It's all about the AMP and the SPEAKERS. Thats it.

Now that I'm off my soap box. . LOL. Yes the amps I mentioned are considered "Car" amps. But I guarantee there's more of these amps in motorcycles than there are in cars!
