I am curious how much louder the various audio packages are compared to what I have. The idea came to me to use my smartphone to roughly measure how loud my system was.
I downloaded the $1.99 "dB Meter Pro - digital decibel level measurement" app by Aexol on my iPhone 6. I set my treble and bass to 2 notches above center and played AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" at maximum volume (just as JM Audio did in their video series). My system hit 108 decibels which was only 1 db off from what JM Audio measured in their video. My bike has the Boom Audio 75 watt x 4 channel amp and 6.5 Stage I speakers.
If anyone else is willing to waste $1.99 on the app, I'd love to see how your Biketronics, Soundz Customz, Hogtunes, JM Audio, or homemade system compares. I'm especially interested in seeing how the Boom Stage II system matches up.
Obviously this is a very unscientific test. It won't tell us who has the best sound, lowest bass, etc. It does however give us some small way to test the various systems from the comfort of our own garages.
i will spend the "half beer" on the app LOL - IF they have it for the android...
yes, "unscientific" and I will not run max volume as that is just plain STUPID....
I will test my system with it. Need to pick a song we all will use (ACDC - not cutting it for me from a frequency range perspective. Perhaps multiple fragments from songs... I can piece something together...
only running sound volume at "clean" level...
Fair enough. I only used AC/DC because I wanted to how close my phone's metering was to J&M's test. I thought being within 1db was pretty close for a non-calibrated instrument.
Let us know what you pick. I'll be having the Stage II system installed tonight and tomorrow, and I'll post my results when I can.
For what it's worth, the stock system on my CVO can absolutely be listened to at full volume. The system isn't clipping or distorted much at that volume. When lowered 3-4 bars from max, the bass sounds better....it is backed off by the system at full power.

Looking forward to hearing the results of the Boom II system. But as we all know db's are not the true tale of the tape. I can take some cheap Pioneer TS-A1685R speakers with a power acoustic RZ4.2000D and they will be so loud you can't hear yourself think. But the quality won't be there. Those results from JM are very misleading.

Hopefully people will be honest as to how their systems sound at what they consider max volume. Like you said, volume doesn't matter if it's just noise!
installed 2 different free apps. Samsung S5 (and most if not all phones) have limit on what they can register (100db). also mics have limited freq. range...
I tested both on bike BLASTING. 90db... I know for a fact it was way more.
might look into free PC software so i can use one of my sm58 mics.

Just installed my BT system yesterday (minus the lids...at painter) and I LOVE it!!! Not just how loud it is, but the quality of the sound. No matter how loud I cranked it, it was crystal clear and full. It would be cool to get a no bull**** decible measurement when all is installed.
