I've been putting my 09 Ultra back together after getting all the tins painted and installing new 12" Yaffee Bagger Bars. Get everything connected and no sound out of the head unit. Then all of a sudden I see and smell smoke. Cut power and disconnect the battery. Could see smoke coming out of the HK Head unit. I pulled it and opened the top. Here is a couple pictures of the area that was smoking. I am running a Cerwin Vega B4 amp for the front upper and lower speakers and a Cerwin Vega B2 amp for the saddlebag speakers. I assume the head unit is likely dead? Since my wife and I use the intercom when we ride together, I have to stay with the HK. All the switches on the handlebars functioned as they should.
I suggest sending it to Iron Cross Radio, to get an estimate to repair. Or just put an add on this site forva take out radio.
But,IMHO it looks like you fried the output SE tion of the amp. Verify you wiring is not shorted, your external Amps are connected properly, and the amps match the impedance and output capacity of the head unit.
Everything was running perfect when I removed it. I labeled all the wires to make sure everything went back together as it should. I looked at Iron Cross' website and it says $250 for repairs. I will be double and triple checking everything.
I just sold one in the classified section for 175.00. It sold in an hour! But there's deals out there if you absolutley needed to replace it asap. However, this just sounds like a perfect excuse for an aftermarket radio!!!
Funny thing is I fried an amp, and I too had some smoke and the guys tell me that the smoke was installed by the factory. If you let the smoke out, it won't work again
Kokes, I have a quick and easy fix to your issue Brother. I have a stock HU sitting here from an upgrade I just did for a guy. It is out of a 2011 and was in perfect operating condition when it came out. If you, or someone, can confirm it will work with your Ultra's Intercom (I think it is just a matter of the bikes harness being either the 23 pin on the left or the 35 pin on the right but I'm not positive) then it's yours and Thank You for your service.
Thank you very much Little Mike. I believe it should work. I'll PM you my email address. If you could send me a picture of the back or the part number, I will be able to confirm it would work. Thank you again.
Hey Gannicus, Can you reach out to Kokes and see if you guys can work something out on one of those stockers you have? He's still in need of a HU. Based on the fact that it took the USPS 5 days longer to deliver it than it was scheduled to take and when he hooked it up the display didn't work and the CD player keeps trying to eject a CD that isn't in it, it sounds like they decided to kick it to NC. I insured it and will take up that fight with them but mean while he is still without tunes.
