I read on another forum that the "only" proper way to install these switches is to run the provided line through the bars to the post-bar connector, and that the common practice of splicing inside the the bar-end controls housing leads to trouble. It would be great to hear this subforum's thoughts on that assertion.

I haven't replaced this part before and don't know exactly what comes in the box. As far as I know the stock wires are run on the outside of the bars.
Here are the 2008 service manual instructions for replacing the control switches.

kit should contain the switch and 4 internally connected wire already attached wires should be long enuf to reach the molex type plug under the fairing. either you pop the plug apart and put new pins on the ends of your new wires or make a solder connection a few inches from connector. the wires on your new swich will be color coded to match existing wires. if you havent worked with the duetch pins and popping apart the connecter ends, you may want to simply solder the wires with some good quality shrink wrap
