The Hertz speakers fit and the stock speakers grills can be used. The Kappas will fit too using stock speaker grills if mounted inside the pods. This is what I have done. Then I put foam to fill up the gap between the pods and fairing. To me, Kappas sound better than Hertz - I had them both.
I tried the Kappas mounted on the outside w/ no speaker grills but the rubber surround rubbed. That's why I finally put them inside the pods.
Tuleyne, If you end up with the HCX 165's in the fairing just a heads up that you MAY need to replace your grills to allow tweeter clearance. I already have aftermarket grills on mine for when I had the Kappas there because there was no way they would fit with the stock grills so I can not say for sure if the Hertz will work with the stock grills. Maybe someone else here with the Hertz can confirm. Also, are you planning on flashing your head unit, using magic box, or doing nothing?
The HCX are a bit pricey for me, will probably go with ECX. I'll probably flash the unit if I feel that someone competent at SD Harley or El Cajon Harley can do it. I talked to someone at the Morena store and they don't even want to discuss Rushmore audio. BTW, I'm assuming you're a Packers fan; if you ever move from Green Bay you should know that unless something's changed since I moved to San Diego, in L.A. the Packers are on TV every week.

I saw on the Biketronics website that they are going to have their larger speakers available next week with a tweeter mounted directly across the speaker bracket. Does that bracket ( which eliminates the speaker pods) create any structural issues with the fairing? My understanding was the pods were designed for rigidity for the fairing, and the idea to make them able to hold speakers was secondary. Also, will the Kappas fit outside the pods with an aftermarket grill?
Here is what happened to my Kappas mounted on the outside. I had them inside last year but they sounded hollow so I put them outside like stock...huge sound improvement, but they got damaged.

Yikes, that's tough to look at. I'm trying to nail down a setup where I only have to remove the fairing once.

Hello Doobie,
I just got off the phone with Bill at Biketronics and he mentioned that they will be out soon with their version of the magic box. After speaking with him and reading some of the horror stories here on HD Forums, flashing the radio is the last thing I want to do. According to Bill, HD keeps making changes trying to salvage a working and dependable BOOM II setup so consequently the latest and greatest flash change soon becomes null and void, so they (Biketronics) are tired of playing whack-a-mole and are manufacturing their line leveler. He seems to definitely be a straight up guy like so many here have said. I plan to to either do nothing or purchase magic box or Bill's new gizmo.
This is excellent news from Biketronics! If I were you I would hold off until they release their device. He didn't happen to say how long it would be did he?

He said they were working on it as we spoke and a prototype would be ready this week. I think I definitely will hold off till they market it. He also told me that their speaker brackets used in lieu of the factory pods could be used with a 6.5 speaker, not just their 7.1.

What mods did you have to do to the pods to make the kappas fit inside? Different screws? Do you have pics of them mounted inside ?
Just asking to explain the process because I might pick up a pair of these

After opening the pods, I only had to cut some inside trim on 1 pod. The other pod the speaker fit in there just fine. Also had to trim down the tabs where the speaker mounts to. Took about 15 minutes to open up and install speakers and close back up. I also installed foam around the outside surround of the speaker since there will be a gap there. I had the speakers both inside and outside the pods and didn't notice a difference in sound. I just wanted to keep my stock speaker grills as they look fine to me.
Note: I did NOT have to make an outside hole in my pods as seen in the video. Just had to trim away (using a dremel) a bit inside.
