I assume using a DMM will make tuning easier and more accurate, so I'd like to try it. Can anyone recommend a basic, cost effective (but decent quality), accurate DMM? I have gotten the Harbor Freight (Cen-Tech) one twice, but both times they were defective (leads pulled off). I'm not sure it's even an option.
I got about 10 floating at my house and friends... (they usually are free with a coupon LOL).
They did the job for me dialing in in the beginning (got O-scope now).
Their upgraded one with the Amp clamp is better.
it is not about putting it right on the money when dialing in.
. It's a True RMS, Auto Ranging DMM that is easy to read and has more functions than I will ever know what to do with. Search Amazon for True RMS Digital Multimeter and you will find lots of choices.
Thanks guys! Looks like I might try another free HF to start (I'll open it there to make sure leads are attached to the wires). If I purchase one, the eM860T looks like a great option.

I really appreciate it!
Go to Sears.. They have a really accurate one for like $20..
Thanks MAK! I was looking at this video online this morning after I saw your first post because I've used and own Extech light meters and find their stuff cost effective, fairly durable, and easy to use.
I have some old Fluke meters
But as long as you get one that reads True you will be fine
Sounds like you are on the right track
and that one Bertk posted is nice
