I'm fairly new to the fourm and to Harley's. I recently purchased a new SGS, and my wife bought a '09 RK. My question is about the RK. It came with a Hoppe Quadzilla fairing with the 4-5" speakers, can the speakers be upgraded to a 5.25"? (I am willing to do some modding.) I did a search and didn't come up with much, most threads died before the final install. I think 4-5.25"s and an amp would make this RK rock.
for sure you can get 5.25s in without much modding at all and while 5 1/4s aren't ideal for producing low frequencies, its what you're working with! You bet that will rock with 4 speaks and an amp...the question is what amp. I'm not familiar with what the insides of that fairing looks like. Can you open it up so we can see what kind of space we're working with? What head unit are you running in it? If you've got a budget or a point you'd like to get to on sound quality, let us know. Guessing the reply you're going to want to look for is Gannicus who surely will be on shortly. He will have a far better baseline for what a good 5.25 speaker should be. Congrats on the new bikes, welcome to the audio forum.
One of my bikes, A Road King with a aftermarket fairing (Wide open), only has room for 4- 5.25 speakers. I have Infinity Kappas run off a Cerwin Vega B4 amp and it rocks.

I like the idea of running the Kappas and the CV B4.
I thought about running one of the BT amps, the Zapco ST-104D.BT for example, and using a Soundman mount for the Iphone. The fairing has an Eclipse unit in it now not sure of model number, but it's not a high end one. SQ is not the top of the list for my wife BT and Iphone compatibiltiy is more important.
What mods are necessary to mount a 5.25" in this fairing if anyone has experience?
I will post some pics of inside the fairing as soon as I get a chance. The wife has been riding quite a bit the last few days.
If you think you may possibly add lowers or lids later on I'd look at the Kicker 41KSC54 speakers. We did a Softail Bagger Conversion on my youngest sons bike and we ran 2 sets of these in the fairing in parallel off a SS pn4.1000 and a set of Pioneer Pros in the lids. To be 5.25 speakers this setup turned out amazing. 4ohm speakers in the fairing would give you the ability to expand later without having to add an amp.
Here is the inside of the Hoppe Quadzilla fairing. There is not enough clearance for 5.25 speakers because of its design for mounting or clearance of the magnet for the outer fairing.
I know it's a different fairing from yours, but I was able to cram DD AW6.5's with BT30 tweeters running off of an Arc 600.4 and a Sony MEX-M70BT into my reckless fairing. I made my own shallow adapters for the aw6.5's and made ABS blanks for the outside speaker holes to mount the tweeters. It's a tight fit but nothing rubs and it sounds great.
