1994 FLHTC with no factory stereo but there is a hole there (with a cover over it) and there's speaker holes and mounts in the inner faring but no speakers.
What I'd like to do:
Plug my iphone into a USB plug and remotely control the volume and track from the handlebars, and play loud music over the speakers I'd install in the factory faring.
Flexibility issues:
Controlling the track isn't too mandatory, but handlebar volume control certainly is. Also, I'd like to use the cavity the OEM stereo would go as a pocket for all these items (amp will install within faring though).
I'm making an assumption that somewhere in this system will be an amp since I'm not using a head unit in the dash, and there will be some central "brain" taking the input from my iphone and remote control of track and volume. Also, whatever hand controls are installed will be aftermarket.
When I google anything about Harley stereos I get a ****-ton of Hog Tunes and BOOM stuff for OEM stereo applications, NOT what I'm working with.

Thanks all.
What size are your speaker holes in the fairing? This will determine what size speakers will go in there. How many speakers do you want to run? This will determine what size amp to purchase. Since you want to use your Iphone. You will need this adapter or something similar:
If it were me I'd go ahead and install an aftermarket radio in the hole provided and connect to the BT from my Iphone. Much more user friendly install. But that's just me.
Thanks, good links there for me to search around in.
Personally I'd rather not have the whole radio on account of the FLHTC doesn't have cruise or radio controls on the handlebars. I don't need radio anyway, all they play now-a-days is ****. I like Pandora, and my own music library, which is all on my phone. I could probably make a whole 200W amp and my phone all fit in the space the OEM radio would go anyway.
your idea of an amp with the put from your phone is fine, the issue comes with having the handlebar controls,,,,if you swap your switchousings to the 96 and later style, from a bike model that has music in it stock, you can add the wiring for the volume and channel switches....then you just need a device that can relay that to your phone,,,i have not seen such a device, but the guys here with more experience will hopefully chime in.

im gonna pipe in here and offer my $.02. my bike is a pilice bike that came with no radio or even a plug for a radio, i incorporated harley switches and housings on the handlebars, bought the 23 pin molex/duetch plug ans some pins and wired in the factory style plug, that gives you the option to plug in a metra/scosche interface and run an aftermarket head unit. for $125 you can get a damn nice marine grade radio that you can bluetooth or USB your phone. with that u will get a 9 to 13 band equalizer to clean up the sound, it might sound like a pain in the ****, but it was well worth it in the end
then simply mount an amp on top of the stereo and match up a good pair of speakers
again, just my $.02
One of them links above had a volume control, but it was basically a potentiometer in the middle of the headphone jack that converted an headphone output to RCA cables to go into the amp. I can work with that, and it's nice and simple. If a shitty song comes up I'll power through it. I tend to get "buttony" when I drive anyway, trying to find a song I like. This might be good for me.
I can put a little "L" bracket on the underside of the left controls and screw that volume control to it. Then I'll have thumb control of the volume, sort of.
