New to audio and was hoping you guys could help. I'm probably asking calc guys to simply add 2 and 2, but I'm looking to add some aftermarket speakers to the stock HK on my 09 Ultra Classic. Not looking to go crazy yet (that will probably come later haha), so just a decent set for the 4 holes right now. Not looking for an amp or anything, just a decent set that drops in with minimal effort. Seems like a good deal on 2 pairs of Hertz DCX 165s in the audio for sale and was wondering if those would be a decent start. Are they plug and play with 6.5 adapters? Thanks all
If you just upgrade the speakers, you will be disappointed in the sound. Most aftermarket speakers are designed to use more power than a stock hu can provide. They will work without an amp but hearing them going down the road will be worse than the stock speakers you have now. Ive been in the same shoes as you with my 08 SG adding 6.5 speakers with adaptors only and it was not a good sound. I then added a rf pbr 300x2 amp because at that time, it was the best fit for both the bike and my budget. My first set of speakers were pioneers and blew them. Second set were kickers and blew them. Then a set of polk mm's and low and behold, they blew too. I finally ended up with hertz hcx 651 and they didn't blow, sounded good. After all that, I thought it was the head unit so I switched out the stock for a kenwood with thumb control adaptor. Come to find out the pbr amp was just not a very good amp. Yea it was loud but distorted with less than half gain and just not a great sound but I could hear my tunes going down the road as long as it was on my mp3 player as fm reception was bad. What I didn't know at the time was electro magnetic signature from the amp sitting on top of the radio distorts fm reception. Most d class amp will do that but the pbr amp was worse than most.
After saying all that, I'm trying to save you the headache that I went thru. Save your pennies and do it right the first time......

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I'll have to put a little more time and effort (not to mention cash) into researching audio and coming up with a good solution
Raising this from the dead because I think I have an actual plan now:
HU - AQ-MP-5BT-H (own now)
Speakers - Polk DB651 x 4 (or MM 652s)
Amp - Stinger SPX700X4
Metra 82-9601 6-1/2" to 6-3/4" Speaker Adapter for 1998-2013 Harley Davidson Touring Models
It looks like this combo would work pretty well without breaking the bank. Thoughts? Thanks!

The mm 652's will serve you better as they are better quality and have better SQ. You will need this too:

I think Crutchfield is running $50 off for the MM652/MM1 right now.
But it's a good time to be looking for higher performance coax speakers so take ur time or u will be back here for a second bite at the apple in short order.
