i understand that a lot of people here have a love affair with the SS amp, i own one and use if for comparisons and sometimes fill in duty until something else shows up on the truck, but these 2 amps, the SSpn1000.4 and the SD 800.4 are not even in the same league. the SD beats the **** out of it at every turn as far as i'm concerned. the only thing the SD doesn't currently have is an adjustable crossover, but the reps told me today that they are coming out with a model that does have it, probably in January. The SD does cost more, but i've always found that you get what you pay for.

One thing I didn't ask is on the SoundDigital 800.4 you mention is that the Evo model? If so it looks huge on their web page. I imagine with the increased size they can fit a lot more circuitry in it.

They only claim 110 W RMS on their website for the 880.4D Evo. I know not all watts are created equal but it seems a little low for such a big amp.

What do you like better than the SS, sound quality in general? If so I can understand. I liked my SS a lot better when I added a DSP. Unfortunately there is no way I could fit one of those 800.4s under my fairing, just too big with my stock head unit.

Hoyt - Read the specs carefully. The SD amp is 110w RMS at 12.6 volts. Most amps advertise their RMS watt at 14.4 volts.

I swapped a SS PN4.1000D for an SD800.4. Same speakers, same head unit. It was like the volume was almost doubled. The SD stuff is very powerful.

I would bet you could fit it in with your head unit. all the way in the back where the guage mounts are needs to be trimmed out, i even had to remove some plastic from the tach and speedo, but once done it was able to slide all the way back and stay in between the verticle metal bracing.. the amp is a bit thicker than most. And Biggzed ic correct about checking to the specs. I wired all 4 faring and lowers on channels 1 and 2, and the tp pods on 3 and 4. With the fronts wired parallel it should be sending 200 watts a side @ 2ohms. the SD800.4 Evo comes in a couple of different ohm rated versions so read the spec sheet carefully and actually draw out a map of the idea to work out the power distribution and ohm loads.

I already had to do that to fit the SS in there. You can see rub marks on the corners where the sound deadening material contacts the amp. I wonder though since it is not as wide would that allow it to fit?

Has anyone noticed if the SD amp is kinder to FM than the SS one? Right now I am very happy with the sound of my front stage with the SS amp. I have to turn the fader towards the rear to keep the front stage from overpowering the rear as it is.

Since I am using a DSP do y'all think there would be any advantage to the SD amp given what I have described? At some point in the future I had thought about trying to find a good used Arc 600.4 to swap out the SS to regain some FM, but those things are pricey.

I would look into a stinger spx700/4 before the arc amp. The stinger is more like a JL amp in SQ and is just a good amp that is easy to install/tune. I have had no problems with fm reception while using the stinger.

Thanks for that info Gypsye. I have heard that the Rushmore bikes don't suffer from interference as much as the older ones like mine do, but I don't know for sure. If anyone can elaborate on that I'd be grateful.

I guess right now my feeling is I am happy with the sound quality of the SS amp now that I have a DSP. I was seriously thinking of swapping it out with another TM400x4ad before I got the PSM. I have talked with another member that did that though and he said he lost some FM reception even with that amp (stock HK head unit like myself). Now I like the sound quality just fine after tuning the PSM, so the only impetus I have for ditching the SS is for something that is known to improve FM reception. I have always heard the ARC is good about that but there isn't anyone around these parts that works with sled audio at all, so I cannot verify anything first hand.

If I had more cash I would love to experiment, but I just can't justify spending money when I am already happy with the sound without knowing for sure if it will regain some reception.

I do appreciate all the info you folks have posted. As I mentioned this forum is the only exposure to sled audio I have access to and the info y'all have posted has gotten me to a good place sound wise.
