slodsm, lowers are HUGE. I had a great JL Audio system on a different bike, and I didn't realize how much lowers added until I didn't have them. I bought the Hogtunes wethead adaptors, and took my bike back to the guy to have them added. Wow!
I use a iPod also. One thing I have noticed is that the eq in the iPod and iPhone make a difference on how it sounds. His eq could have been set different than your iPod.

glad I just saw this, I knew mine was just not right, my phone was set to small speaker, set it to flat and it’s way better now!

tried a few different ones, kept going back to flat, though I did only spend about 5 minutes in the garage, I’ll definitely play with it a bit now that I know about it, there are a bunch of different settings.

Those older iPods actually have very good audio circuitry in them. They are big enough to house it so to speak.

Also the sound quality of an iPod is up to the user in a lot of ways. You can rip your music at a higher bit rate if you wish. I rip my CDs at 192 kbps and on the bike it sounds fine. It actually sounds a little better than Pandora does on my phone. If you want to experiment you can try ripping your CDs at higher bit rates but at highway speeds you probably won't notice much difference.

I have about a half a dozen older click wheel iPods that I use on the bike because it is easy for me to reach into the pouch and just click the wheel instead of fiddling with it. They all sound just fine to my ears. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 and have used it a time or two and can't say that it sounds any better. The nice thing about the Samsung though is it is an Android OS so I don't have to use any software to copy music to it. I just plug it into my computer and copy my music to it using Windows Explorer.

Thanks to everybody who pointed out the EQ in the Ipod. Mine was off. The 2 that sounded the best were Flat and Rock, but that was with ear buds. I'll try them when I can get out for a ride. Lots of settings to play with.

off and flat sounded the same to me, depending on the song I played, some there was a minor difference

Off and Flat sounded the same to me too. I'll try Flat since I've always ridden with it off. See if it makes any difference. (Still gonna have to try Rock also!))
